It was the first time the Annual PTO Carnival at the G. Harold Antrim Elementary School featured pie-throwing.
The fun began at 11 a.m. Saturday. Seven victims, 300 pies and 60 cans of whipped cream later, it was obvious this latest addition was a big hit - in more ways than one!
Antrim Principal Thomas J. O'Hara and Sharon Lasher, who teaches seventh and eighth grade Science, were among those who got walloped with pies for a full 30 minutes (wow, that must have felt like a lot longer!).
Kids also had a great time on the giant slide and in the bouncy house, as well as playing 14 different carnival games.
Bubbles the Clown did balloons and the Garnet Gull Mascot also swooped in for a visit.
Peg Born said she and Missy Mosco, co-chairs, "want to send out a big thank you to A-1 Tents for donating the popcorn and cotton candy machine, Rt. 88 Pet World for donating the gold fish and to all the parents and teachers who volunteered to helped make this event a success for the kids.
"This year, we got even more participation and help from the teachers and we really appreciate it," Born said.
Born said the turnout was huge, possibly helped by Saturday's rain.

Disgraceful in my opinion. This carnival act sends children the wrong message on too many levels. We're teaching children respect for their elders and for authority figures...by allowing them to throw pies at the face of their principal and teachers? Thats rediculous. Also there are people starving all over the world and so many who can't afford to buy food...even some right here in Pt. Beach. Im sure they would love to have one of those 300 pies and a little wipped cream that were wasted for their Easter dinner table. There are much better ways to have good clean fun...that don't send the wrong message to children and the community. Slides, bounce castles, and clowns are all acceptable means of fun. Pie-throwing should be banned from any future events by the BOE and school officials and the parents, teachers and administrators should use better judgement.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but throwing whipped cream pies has been used as a form of fun and entertainment for years. Disgraceful???? Showing disrespect???? I don't think so. Showing their teacher and principal as fun-loving good sports.......yes! So relax "just a mom" because teaching respect involves a whole lot more than a whipped cream pie throw. Having been a member of a PTA for many years I do know that everyone's opinion is welcome, so next year offer to help out at the carnival and offer your suggestions.
