SAT. UPDATE: Beach Condos Would Also Have to Give Approval
Mayor acts Fri. after Bret Gordon says he will change vote
Mayor Vincent Barrella said he told Martell's on Friday that the town is allowing them to use a south end parking lot to store building materials and equipment to rebuild the end of Martell's Tiki Bar pier.
The mayor's contact with Ed Brannagan, Martell's manager, followed Point Beach Councilman Bret Gordon saying in an email on Friday morning that he is changing his vote to allow Martell's to use the lot.
It appears, at this point, that there are now enough council votes for Martell's to set up shop in the parking lot behind Risden's beach and its southernmost building on the boardwalk, just off New Jersey Avenue, rented by Surf Taco this past summer.
Saturday Update:
However, there is a question now about whether Martell's needs permission from other property owners, including Risden's and the Beach Condos Association which apparently owns part of the beach in front of the condos.
Jim Kenvin, a resident who lives at Beach Condos, informed Patch on Saturday morning that the beach in front of the Beach Condos is owned by the owners/Beach Condos association.
"Risden's manages the beach for us in exchange for free beach passes. So Martells would need to get our permission to use our beach as a thruway," Kenvin wrote in an email.
On Friday, Ronald Gasiorowski, Martell's attorney, acknowledged that his client must secure permission from Risden's.
Gasiorowski said, "The owners of Risden's are lovely people, we're exploring that possibility. I have spoken to them and I'm confident we'll have something worked out."
Gordon emailed the mayor, most council members and the municipal clerk Friday morning, stating the following:
"Mayor, fellow Council members,
Although I feel the vote on not allowing Martell's to utilize town space for their building materials was justified (I genuinely struggle providing favors for a business that routinely sues our town for their personal gain at the expense of our taxpayers), I am now reconsidering my vote. In the spirit of rebuilding our town and in the truest spirit of this Christmas season, I am changing my vote to allow Martell's to use town property to facilitate in the reconstruction of their pier.
I hope to see you all at the Christmas tree lighting ceremony this evening. Respectfully, Bret"
In a telephone interview early Friday afternoon, Gordon said he was not swayed by anyone to change his vote.
"I saw some nasty comments on Patch, but that didn't sway me," he said. "Every decision I make, I take seriously and this one just weighed more heavily on my brain. I'm man enough to change my mind when the situation warrants it. We need to move forward, in spite of their legal representation."
When asked what he meant in the reference to Gasiorowski, Martell's attorney, Gordon said, "No comment."
Regarding his email, Gordon said, "I stand by what I wrote, it was heartfelt. It was a difficult choice. It was a difficult choice when I made the original choice. But I was trying to use the fact that it's difficult to provide a favor to someone who is harming your town, sort of speak.
"But truly, in the spirit of rebuilding, and in the spirit of the Christmas season, I rethought this," Gordon said. "And in interest of all parties I decided to change my vote. We need to move forward. Hopefully, we can gain a new footing in our relationship."
So what does it mean that Gordon is changing his vote?
Municipal Attorney Sean Gertner said in a telephone interview early Friday afternoon that either council can wait and vote on Martell's request again at its next meeting, which is on Dec. 18, which would mean Martell's cannot use the lot until after that meeting.
Or Barrella can authorize Martell's to use the lot and then the council can retroactively ratify that at the Dec. 18 meeting. That is apparently the option Barrella chose on Friday.
Regarding Gordon's change of heart, Gasiorowski said he had seen the email, but he had no comment.
Superstorm Sandy wiped out the new Trex boardwalk in front of New Jersey Avenue, so that now, one walks from the road directly onto sand.
It appears that made the spot attractive to Martell's contractor, which would not have to somehow lug pilings and equipment over a boardwalk to get it onto the beach.
Gasiorowski said at the meeting that the builder indicated the Risden's lot is the only spot that would make a good staging area for building materials and equipment, which could then be moved onto the beach and north to Martell's.
Councilmembers William Mayer and Stephen Reid voted yes. Councilmember Tim Lurie, who Gordon did not send his email to on Friday morning, was absent. Barrella did not vote because in the Borough Council form of government, the mayor only votes when there is a tie.
Barrella had said at the meeting that he would have voted yes, but added that he thought David Bassinder had "chutzpah" for asking, even as Martell's is suing the town for its District 4 summer parking plan and its pending proposal to close bars at midnight.
Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.

These comments about Martell's "harming your town" is a load of you-know-what. You're trying to close their business by restricting their hours and making it difficult for their patrons visit their establishment. Of course they are suing you. By moving forward with your plan to continue to try to harm their business, you are giving them no choice but to continue with their lawsuit.

Not even remotely close, but my family has had a home on the boardwalk for over 50 years, and I think that the way the council members have chosen to go after the businesses that have been a huge part of bringing visitors to our town is a travesty.
I have never even known anyone that worked for Martell's as far as I know.

Pd you are exactly right. And I think the council members who voted "no" have zero future in PPB politics. And they know that. Thus, Gordon has a change of heart. Thanks Gordon, but too late. You've shown what poor character you have.

Small minded people in a small town. They are never happy and will complain not matter what anyone tries to do. This a "dam if you do" or "dam if you don't" town. You really can't do anything right by this town. Who the heck would ever want to run and why the people from here become less involved. Obviously this town did not learn anything from this storm. Maybe next time point pleasant will not be so lucky. It is a real shame and as less get involved don't complain or ask why no one no longer wants to get involved.

How in God's name is Martell's harmful to this town !! And as a comment before you are 100% correct about damage control. The Mayor & Council were not prepared for the comments they recieved yesterday & 1 more thing please leave Christmas out of your decision to change your vote. Am I to guess if it was Arbor Day you wouldn't have changed your vote.

I'm glad to see that Gordon changed his vote, and that Martell's will be allowed to use the parking lot. That was the right decision. I am disappointed to see that Gordon feels that his decision to change his vote was not based on the comments he's read or or heard. I understand that it's difficult to change your mind on something, and publicly acknowledge a change of decision, but I do think that our elected officials need to remember that they are up there to represent us and do what is right for the town. That type of representation requires a willingness to listen to opinions and ideas, including those that come from outside one's political circle/political allies. There's nothing wrong with an elected official acknowledging that he is rendering a decision that is in accordance with the will of the people rather than in accordance with one's personal feelings.

Change vote - smote, but grateful just the same! I have seen few articles written about families that were 10 houses from Mayor "What's His Name" in Pt. Beach who were swimming-for-survial between 12 midnight & 4 a.m. (You know - if the mayor isn't leaving and he's ten houses away; so why should I? Did he forget about leading by example once again?) AFTER Sandy hit landfall, in pt. boro a guy named Jude Walker from Public Works brougt people to safety from 2nd floor balconies & beyond in Pt. Boro for 17 HOURS STRAIGHT during using a front loader tractor during & after the storm. A beautiful young mom on the south corner of Baltimore Ave & Princeton told strangers that she went to her attic and waited to drown while her twin sons & husband were protected in another location. Are you kidding me? And two adults in their late 50s and their pure bred crated dogs at 202 Princeton Ave almost lost their lives swimming-for-survival as if it was a movie as they scaled backyard fences because all the bright people in all towns from here to eternity had NO answer for people in danger who happened to have beloved pets who are part of their family & who they are. What year is this? We must consider ourselves a lucky & grateful and humbled community that we did NOT get five more inches of rain that day. So thank you Mr. Gordon. Now LEAD and make the council folks above you and below you stop this nonsense. Make them stop. We're upset enough.

Mayor, I don't agree with you that often, but I DO AGREE with your comments above about Mr. Gorden. He's a good man and has the interest of the town in the for front.
Some of the people making comments act and sound like the council members are making some huge salary. This would be a better town if council members like Mr. Gorden had the guts to put the hatchet aside for the sake of the town and move forward. We can all get back to fighting later.

Hey Rick.... Nice note but we're talking about Pt. Pleasant Beach! Why in the world are these council people & this mayor walking around with hatchets/ axes to grind & bury anyway? What the heck happened to these pathetic people? Most of us were walking around town helping traumatized neighbors hearing 1st hand some of the stories I reveal above and it looks like Mr. Mayor and his pals were putting on dry army boots planning their next attack on Boardwalk Businesses. I'm sorry but that fact is sickening to a lot of good people who call PPBch home!

That was very nice Mr. Gorden, its about time you see the light. PD , I agree with you and it is a shame, and an embarrassment I might add, that some members of this council make this whole town look bad. In fact, the taxpayers of PPB recently proved a change was so necessary in our election results. God Bless our two new council members. I hope they will always continue follow their heart , and keep in mind the best interest of all taxpayers in PPB .

Everyone that is on here name calling is an embarrassment to the town. The people make the town and obviously you people are insane. To get on the Patch after what happened to accuse others to keep the best interest in mind. Maybe all these council members feel they are and there is just difference of opinions and knowledge of what is going on that others in town don't. "You people make me sick" What we need is more transparency, stop the lying and repeated attacks on who ever someone does not agree with. GROW UP PEOPLE!

I am firmly convinced the Patch played a significant role in changing Mr. Gordon's mind on this matter because of the timing. BUT WHO CARES! The bottom line is the rebuilding is getting done and that is what matters. Kudos to the Patch! And kudos to Mr. Gordon. This may make you look bad in the eyes of your friends and may ring hollow in the ears of some BUT you had the guts to admit a mistake. Good show, Sir. Good show.

After reading my previous post, I think it may have left the wrong impression. The "WHO CARES" part is in reference about whatever the reason was for this change of heart. If anyone took it any other way, my apologies. Now let's get to work. Memorial Day is closer than you think.

Opinionated, I agree. Sandy has left us with enough obstacles to deal with. I see that Ms. DiStephan has updated this article to say that approval is needed from Risden's and the Beach Condo Assoc. I hope that these entities will be willing to work with Martells so that the reconstruction can begin. We need PPB restored as soon as possible, for the good of the businesses and residents, alike.

Your town has some serious problems after reading two different articles on the same subject. Unbelievable behavior from reading some posts. You sound like a bunch of babies having a tantrum just because you might not agree or you did not get your own way. Possibly this council member went home and thought, I don't think I am comfortable with the decision I made and I am changing my position is still getting attacked. Suddenly he is a great man to some that just attacked him a few hours prior for a different decision and others are still not happy. I am sure his decision had nothing to do with the "Patch News" or those hollering on here. It could have been himself putting more thought into it just thinking it's not right. Either way some are still not happy. Certain people or groups is not always going to agree. Stop acting like a bunch of babies. You all should be embarrassed getting on here after what your town has been through. I don't know to me it sounds like ppb1955 and mom46 are the ones with axes to grind against everyone. That tells me they are the ones with the problems and their sour grape attitudes. What I do know your dirty laundry has been aired all over the news and everyone is talking about your town. I blame the council and the businesses, you are both airing your laundry by trying to get your own groups on your side. Businesses are great having in any town, but they can't do what ever they want either. You do need to keep the residents in mind too.

I do not understand the lack of support for businesses on the boardwalk. I read an independent study on the amount of money PPB spends on extra police, dpw, etc during the summer months. The end result was a 600% return on their investment. That seems like good business to me. My family has owned a home in PPB for over 40 years. We have never called the police, ambulance or fire department. We have never used the public library. We have never had a child in the school system. We have only paid taxes and spent money in local shops. It's all yours 10 months a year but remember we pay 12 months a year. PPB is beautiful and there for all to enjoy. Rebuild and be better than ever.
