Brielle's Bogans Guilty Of Tax Evasion

Pair with deep roots in community plead guilty to not paying taxes

A father and daughter who own and operate Bogan’s Deep Sea Fishing Center in Brielle on Wednesday admitted in federal court to failing to report or pay income taxes on a large portion of the money they took in while running their business, authorities said.

William H. Bogan Sr., 76, and his daughter, Sharon Bogan, 47, each pleaded guilty to charges of income tax evasion before U.S. District Judge Freda L. Wolfson, sitting in Trenton.

Bogan Sr. and Sharon Bogan, owners of several charter fishing boats and river cruising boats located in Brielle and Point Pleasant Beach, failed to report large portions of income earned for five years, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

From 2004 through 2009, the Bogans kept for their personal use a large portion of the business receipts received by their charter fishing and river cruising boats – primarily payments in the form of cash and checks made out to “Captain Bogan” – and failed to report these receipts on their respective personal income tax returns, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

William Bogan admitted that in 2006 alone, he failed to report more than $300,000 in income he diverted from the charter fishing and river cruising boats. William Bogan further admitted that he maintained a “second set of books,” which was recovered by special agents of the IRS during a search of his personal residence and which he used to record the amount of income he received but did not report to the IRS, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

The charge of tax evasion carries a maximum prison term of 5 years. Sentencing for both of the Bogans is scheduled for Oct. 4, the U.S. Attorney said.

If you're going to commit this kind of crime, don't keep a second set of books!

"They should have gone to jail for poaching 800+ Sea Bass"...

The Captain drives the boat and tells the customers prior to fishing what is legal to keep and that it is their responsibility to obey the laws. It is no more his responsibility as it is for the captain of a jetliner to check passengers for bombs.. Besides, the gov wouldn't make near that amount of money if they just fined the capt.

You have to keep books. How can you make business decisions without knowing the impact on revenues and expenses. The cheating culture is getting worse and worse. Pay your taxes people. If you don't, you are cheating your neighbors. Don't like it? Vote in leaders that will implement changes that you can abide by.

The moral of the story is NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED!
The Bogan Family rescued survivors from the Morro Castle in 1934, Maybe they should bill the Govenment for their actual costs both variable and fixed, along with interest from 1934. Congress as usual didn't award medals: Too many people wanted these medalians

Wait wait wait. So, if you rescue people from a shipwreck, you get a waiver and don't have to pay income taxes for a five-year period beginning 70 years later? Or is it the case that you never have to pay income taxes ever? My grandfather rescued a guy from drowning in Bradley Beach when he was 18, which would have been right about the same time. Have I been screwing up paying taxes all this time?

Please, help me understand.

This is absolute gibberish. They did one good deed in '34 so they shouldn't be punished for ripping off the gov and their fellow citizens for years? Bizarre set of ethics you have there.

None of the Bogan's who helped in the Morro Castle event are alive any longer so how is that logical thinking in your little pea brain? And if a family or person does a good deed, their ancestors for all time should have a free pass to break the law? It's sad that you don't have the capacity to comprehend that the Bogans are hurting all of us by failing to declare their income and pay tax on it. And it's even sadder that greed got the better of William and Sharon Bogan. The family has been disgrace.... was all the money they stole worth that? I wonder.....if you are of their ilk, you probably think so....

Thank You For Sharing!
These unfortuante events are quite ironic. However, When the government says help is on the way: The Morrow Castle, Bataan, 911, and Sandy, just don't hold your breath
waiting for that help!

-Do not misunderstand me Please Pay your Taxes. We all have to pay our taxes and Die, and that includes Captain Bogan too!
However, after October when Captain Bogan surrenders the keys to the Jamaica, and Paramount to the IRS, It will be the Government, and not Captain Bogan who will have to rescue people from maritime disasters large and small, or minor mishaps. But at least Bogan's One set of books will be in squeaky clean order!
I hope this helps!

There is a lot of companies large to small that don't pay taxes. It is the reason why we have a lot of current problems. Let's get real, must have been forced to become cheaters and pay very little taxes to our government. It is all the peon's that pay taxes because the businesses have so many loop holes that the government has allowed and promoted.
