UPDATE: Stolen Car Pulled From Bay, Just Off Route 37 Bridge
Recovery not related to Hurricane Sandy; car was stolen, police said
The vehicle removed Tuesday from the water near the end of the Tunney Bridge had been reported stolen in January, police said.
The New Jersey State Police notified Toms River police on Feb. 18 that the vehicle, a 2011 Ford Edge, was in the water, about 100 feet east of the shoreline at the Pier One Motel, said Chief of Police Michael Mastronardy.
"Corporeal Paul Burkhardt of the Toms River Police Dive Team inspected the vehicle determined it was not occupied and retrieve its license plate," the chief said.
Police determined that the vehicle was reported stolen from a Nostrand Drive home in Holiday City, Berkeley, on Jan. 23.
"Working with New Jersey State Police and Berkeley Township Police, the vehicle was towed from the bay on Tuesday afternoon," Mastronardy said.
The vehicle was not related to the storm Sandy.
Some on social media had speculated that the vehicle may have found its way into the bay because of Hurricane Sandy. The bay is among the many New Jersey waterways that are targeted for cleanup.

This car should have been left in the bay for an "oyster reef".

Question.....how did police know where it was? A tip? The water is too deep there to be seen by just glancing over.

What bothers me is that the car was stolen from Holiday City and there was no report on the Patch at that time, how come? Nice to know that if you live in that area that there is possibly a car theft in the area, no? Scary.
Yes, and how did they know it was there and how did it get there?!

You expect Patch to write an article every time something like this happens?
According to a PATCH.COM ARTICLE (surprise!), in 2011 "there were 215 robberies, including eight bank robberies, 2,300 burglaries, and 8,881 larcenies – smaller thefts including pickpockets, purse snatchings, vehicle parts or bicycles – last year in Ocean County. There were twice as many daytime burglaries as night time burglaries, the data showed."
Maybe you should give the Patch.com editors a hand in writing the estimated 10,000 articles you wish to see?

BTW, I've been meaning to ask. Did you mean "there is possibly a car thief in the area"?
Because a thief is someone who commits a theft.

Okay. Not Sandy. Good. Holiday City, nowhere near the island. So let's get those Berkeley Township police patrolling South Seaside Park and not sitting 24/7 talking to the state police. Time to go to work.

No, LeeAnn, I don't "expect" anything from the Patch. Just a little help on what is going on around town would be nice, no?

Really? Did you read about this car theft in any newspaper? How about on a local radio station?
Maybe because the car was stolen in Berkeley, it was reported on the Berkeley Patch and you didn't see it.

I have a few questions about this. Why would TR call a tower from East Hanover and not one the contracted towers? Why is the wrecker facing against traffic? Isn't the idea of a rotator to rotate?
Rick

You can tell from any of the pictures where the wrecker came from?
Great eyesight you have there.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic Rick. You can clearly read the name of the company, AJACO, on the side of the boom.
Rick
11:18 am on Friday, February 22, 2013
And you went through all the effort to find out where Ajaco towing is located, just to complain about something?
Aren't you special.
Phil MacKenzie

All the effort? You mean Google?
Rick
1:11 am on Tuesday, February 26, 2013
Since you asked Mr Phil, no. I prefer Yahoo for my search engine.
What I meant was why would anyone bother to figure out the name on the boom, which could be the name of the company that built it, and then do a search to see where it came from.

I have to laugh...The Patch is a free online service to the community and yet people complain that there is not enough "News" or "Updates". Why not go out and buy the Asbury Park Press at a buck a pop and feel satisfied then?
I have found out more information from this free online service (that I do not know who funds) than from any one dollar Asbury Park Press paper. As a matter of fact, Patch get it to me before I see it on New Jersey News Station! Why complain? Fact is on the subject of the car, the report here says it was reported stolen so therefore someone was missing it. For those who do not read the article and are so quick to put in their two cents...say "Thank you" for the free online service. JMO

Very good point Sandra. I too rely much more on the TR Patch than the APP for my local news these days. APP software is not handled well on my computer and of course the Patch is totally free. I like you appreciate what I get for free on here.

Why don't Toms River PATCH concentrate on making the Gas Companies, The Electrical Companies and the Water Company do their job and put up the poles that are still missing and hook up the houses that are permanent residences with the necessary utilities so people can go back home and live! What a shame for this to be ongoing and the "Officials" in Toms River sitting on their handsa and worrying about only Seaside Heights!

Wish people would stop coming on here to complain about stuff that doesn't pertain to the article no one cares if you don't have utilities your tough luck fatboy

It's not Patch's job. Contact the state Board of Public Utilities and they'll get after the slowpokes.

Have you tried calling them? You either get hold on all lines are busy or try again later! The Gas company , in Ortley Beach, has given us 4 to 5 different dates that it will hook up.Friday was the last date we got the 22nd, we went down and no one showed again. Called them and now the date is March 4th! Still no water either, same story same result!
