Devastation, Horror in Brick As Rescues Continue Through Tuesday

A family hoisted up in the bucket of a front loader gave a quick wave to neighbors after they were whisked from their home on Port Road.

A few blocks away, two men in a kayak – with a small puppy in tow – had just escaped flood waters the old fashioned way: paddling out.

Those types of stories played out over and over again Tuesday in Brick, where flooding barely receded after a wall of water came onshore in the hours following the landfall of Hurricane Sandy Monday night.

Joel Matos was inspecting neighbors’ homes near Port Road – the same street  off Cherry Quay Road where two houses burnt down – and said he had never seen flooding like this before.

“Last night, everyone was moving their cars to the ball field,” he said. “Some people slept in their cars because their houses were full of water.”

It was impossible to access the Shore Acres section of town, even in a high-seated SUV.

Police used a squad car, a taxi cab and a school bus to block off a portion of Drum Point Road where live wires had fallen, filling the air with an acrid odor of burning electrical equipment.

Near the entrance to Shore Acres, an elderly woman was being led out of flood waters by an Ocean County Sheriff’s Department officer, who helped her wrap a blanket around her shoulders to keep warm while waiting to be evacuated to a shelter.

In the Baywood section, streets were completely underwater. One man, who did not give his name, said the bay had risen to three feet above the bulkhead behind his home. A massive dump truck driven into the neigborhood barely made it through the flood waters as it headed in the direction of Baywood Marina, its brake lights underwater by the time it turned the corner.

On the barrier island, officials said houses were still burning. Smoke was visible from across the bay. Firefighters had no way of accessing the island to fight the fires, however.

Traffic was chaotic across town, especially in the Herbertsville section, which was completely out of power.

Police put up cones at various intersections of Route 70, and other roads but some drivers ignored them and simply ran them over. Traffic was blocked from crossing the intersection of Route 70 and Route 88, however, largely preventing travel from one side of town to the other.

A pool of deep water blocked Old Hooper just west of the intersection with Mantoloking Road. On Mantoloking itself, the road was inaccessible east of Tilton Road.

Some stores were open, however. Long lines formed at the Burger King and KFC fast food restaurants on Brick Boulevard, and a massive line had formed at Costco’s gas station on Route 70.

Despite the stores choosing to open, police continued to urge residents to stay home, and a local state of emergency that banned unnecessary travel remained in place.

WE ALL MUST THANK **FUTURE RECYCLING** COMPANY FOR VOLUNTEERING THIER TIME AND SERVICES as the dump truck you see in the above pic was provided by them. We took advantage of their services and kindly they drove residents to their homes to gain access for the first time and/or collect personal belongings as traditional vehicles couldn't drive the roads.

They said the thought boats were thrown about, and a lady on another post said she was on Paul Jones and they had several feet of water, and I believe that was yesterday morning. It sounds bad.

Vanard Drive is very badly flooded. I have family members with two separate homes on the one-way loop of Vanard. From what I've heard the club house is gone. One of their houses that was a few lots up from the club house on low ground is essentially destroyed; the first floor flooded with very high water. The other house near the Shore Acres sign at the beginning of the loop appeared to have water 1/3 of the way up the front door from a photo sent to me via text message. The area was unreachable without a boat. The water receded enough today for another family member to finally get in and rescue a cat from the second floor of the badly damaged house and only described it as "uninhabitable". The Shore Acres Community is in bad shape. As far as i know nobody has been harmed. Sorry to inform you of the bad news, but i wanted to let you know the status.

Other houses, especially low ones built on slabs weren't so lucky and were flooded.

@Kathy: Mathis did not get the brunt of the force. It did flood at least 5ft high but the homes on the lagoon side of Mathis seem structurally intact from the photos I obtained. Boats are overturned, decks destroyed, etc. but i didn't notice any houses gone or collapsed there. Keep in mind the photos i got were of our own families homes which was the main concern, i'm sure you understand, so i can only see glimpses of others houses along the lagoon. Family members are returning tomorrow for a second look of the area. If you still need a photo email me at Badfishhh0116@gmail and i'll see what i can do for you.

I saw the photos of mantaloking. Sandy seems to have created an inlet where the bridge entered the barrier island. I wonder if the water levels are still high because of this or just the full moon. Back in the 1800's there was an inlet across from the toms river called cranberry inlet. It was closed by a storm. How history repeats itself. Keep your chins up folks. We will rebuild this

Re: Shore Acres: The water has mostly receded and the area is now accessible. There is extensive destruction to many homes there. My grandfather had one of the first original homes on Vanard Dr. on low ground near the mouth of the lagoon to the bay near the clubhouse and his house is now destroyed. Half the house broke off, the deck and pool demolished with random boats and jetskis littered about. A next door neighbor with a newer home on higher ground has power now and sustained little damage. I'm sorry for anyone disturbed by this account but if you have a home in that area on low ground or especially on the waterfront, you should prepare yourself for the worst before going in. I'm sorry for the bad news. I've got many photos of Brick and the Shore Acres area being taken now and sent to me soon and i'll try to send them in asap since there is currently little news about the area. Too many to send all of them to everyone. I hadn't seen the requests here for photos of the homes of those that are out of town but my family will return to Shore Acres tomorrow for further assessment. If you are out of town and live in the area of Vanard Dr. in Shore Acres and if you email me your home's address I will try to have someone take photos of your home and send them to you. Please understand we are also dealing with this disaster and have been hit very badly. I cannot make any promises but will do my best to help those who are still in the dark about their home.
