Mantoloking Bridge Considered 'Unstable;' Fires Raging Nearby
Emergency crews will access barrier island neighborhoods from the south
Two days after Hurricane Sandy hit the area, fires still rage in Camp Osborn.
Emergency services were on the ground as of this morning, according to Brick Police Sgt. Keith Reinhard.
"We have people on the ground, but they had to go in by foot," he said. "We will have a larger contingency coming from the south, the Toms River area."
The Mantoloking Bridge was damaged during Sandy and during a prelimenary inspection, county officials have deemed the bridge unstable, ploice said.
"We have focused our efforts on the mainland, doing search and rescue in low lying areas," Reinhard said. "Now our focus is going to be on the barrier island, as well as removing trees and power lines from the roads."
State EMS and the National Guard, who should be arriving in the area today, are on hand to assist in search and rescue efforts on the barrier island.
"We are very fortunate to have these resources on hand to help," he said.

Paul, as I mentioned below, there is no "old bridge" there. It was replaced by the current one pictured in the photo a few years ago. - DN

My husbands grandmother lost her house it was directly on the beach. My father in-law remembers planting trees around the house to protect it from the storm surge when he was a child and the only thing left standing today are those trees.

This bridge is brand new, less than 5 years old dare I say. The loss of life so far is not high thank god, but the destruction is close to katrina levels, maybe even higher given the value of what was lost.

There is no "old bridge". It was replaced. And bayville is not near the ocean. So that is why you are hearing less about it. They do have waterfront property of course- but not near ocean. It's on the mainland.

The amount of destruction and devastation to our town and neighboring towns is extremely upsetting. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been effected by Sandy. Only by pulling together and helping friends neighbors and strangers can we over come this.Let the world see just what a strong state New Jersey is and how it's people are respected citizens God Bless

Does any one else think it is a shame that when you go to the Brick website that there is no info whatsoever with what is going on. It would be helpful for an official response on what is going on with the fires as well as if any emergency people are in the area to protect our properties. It would also be helpful if they can tell us as homeowners what steps (such as contacting FEMA, flood insurance, etc) we should be taking at this time. If anyone knows what steps we should be doing or where to find the steps it would be helpful

I can check, but nothing on the scanner about it. The rumor mill is churning pretty quickly so I'd be suspect of just about any sensational stories about bridges collapses and such unless it's confirmed by police or there is a photo to corroborate.

Rick - you can drive down Royal Dr now. Yesterday, it was only accessible by boat or front loader, so they were preventing residents from going to down there. Today, the water has receded and you shouldn't have any problem getting to your in-laws property. Good luck, we were hit pretty hard -- the closer they were to the bay, the more water they likely took on.

Is there anything left of Point Boardwalk? and our beautiful shops in Bay Head? Will be a long time before we can say "I'm going to take a quick run over to the ocean"...I love going off season with a cup of coffee and just watch the waves, such a great stress reliever...this is heart breaking! Our bridge was beautiful, the township did a great job with the bridge and that new park area off the Bay, was just there last week with my son taking pics for photography class.
