Christie Slams 'Corzine Democrats,' Vows to Keep Fighting for Tax Cut

Governor holds town hall meeting in Brick Township

Gov. Chris Christie vowed to "kick (legislators') rear ends" to get New Jersey residents a tax cut during a town hall meeting Tuesday in Brick.

Christie repeatedly slammed Statehouse Democrats for inaction on his desired 10 percent income tax cuts and promised that taxes will never rise so long as he is governor in his latest stop on the "Jersey Comeback" tour at Lake Riviera Middle School.

An estimated 750 people packed the school's gymnasium just four days before the state's fiscal year ends and two days after the Assembly and Senate passed a $31.7 billion 2013 budget on strict party line votes, with no Republican support.

With the last legislative session before recess scheduled for Thursday, Christie said he'd hound majority Democrats up and down the state all summer if they don't act to reduce residents' tax burden.

"I'm going to point out... that these folks lied," he said. "I'm going to kick their rear ends from one end of the state to the other to get you your tax cut."

Democrats in the Statehouse set aside $183 million in the $31.7 billion spending plan to pay for property tax credits but propose to tie the relief to state revenue figures. Separate legislation would be needed for the proposed givebacks, but only if the governor's ambitious revenue targets hold through December. Democratic lawmakers have said the state likely cannot afford an across-the-board income tax cut in light of disappointing revenue figures the past few months.

Christie, however, branded legislators as tax-and-spend lawmakers who are not willing to send money back to the residents.

"These Corzine Democrats are all about raising your taxes," he said.

Christie also labeled Sen. Paul Sarlo, Democratic chair of the Senate Budget Committee, an "arrogant S.O.B." for a comment reported in the Star-Ledger in which he likened the Democrats' tax cut proposal to "putting the cookies on the table and saying 'be good and you can have it later.' "

"He's got to be one arrogant S.O.B... to tell the people when they've been good enough to get your money back," Christie said.

"I'll fight the fights that are worth fighting," the governor said. "We have a fight on our hands worth fighting now."

Christie also said he's extended his hand across the aisle to work with Democrats during his tenure, but the current budget process shows him he was "fooled" to think they can work in a bipartisan fashion.

Sen. Barbara Buono, D-Middlesex, said Monday that Christie was playing politics with the budget and failing to lead.

"All the threatening, hostile and inflammatory comments do is escalate tensions rather than defuse them. You get the sense that even as the Senate and Assembly leadership were trying to engage him, the governor was too busy planning his response to even listen," she said on the floor of the Senate.

"His abject refusal to negotiate shows a failure in leadership. Drawing a line in the sand and digging in your heels over a completely irresponsible tax cut is not leadership. The governor remains stubbornly delusional, and sadly, that's been reflected in this budget process. His refusal to negotiate this most important of documents defined this budget process, defines his administration and should not be something to crow about in town hall meetings," Buono said.

Several members of the public were called upon to speak, with most either praising Christie or asking for his personal help in different matters.

Hannah Infantolino of Brick, a member of the Historic Preservation Commission, was promised assistance from Christie's office toward achieving grant monies for the preservation of township buildings, for example. A Pine Beach man was told there would be "repercussions" when the resident claimed a Department of Environmental Protection staffer threatened to "bury him" in violations for a perceived slight.

Otherwise, residents' questions offered Christie the chance to emphasize the themes of the day.

Christie told one Toms River man concerned about the economy that it will be difficult to retain businesses in New Jersey without a lower tax burden.

"We don't create jobs in government. We create the atmosphere for jobs," Christie said.

Officials have "suffocated" the economy with taxes, he said. "We're not going to fix the problem overnight... we need to lower income taxes."

Ballyjduf,
I think he's getting ready to play the role of Lou Costello - he has gained a few pounds. Instead of all these threats and harsh words he should start with a few jokes. The tax cut still falls to his lap. The projected income does not match the budget he presented to the Senate and Assembly - instead of inflated projections next time present a realistic budget.

Gov Christie: In case you have not noticed, a 10% break on the income tax the people of Brick pay is pennies compared to what the tax break would be on our property taxes. I would encourage you to support a 20% tax break on our property taxes. A 10% property tax break would be sooooo much more than your stingy offer of a 10% income tax break. Please do not insult our intelligence - your numbers do not add up to any real relief in my middle class pocket. The % sounds good - but I encourage all those reading this to take out their income tax and figure out just what little money your are offering us. Then, figure out what 10% and 20% of your property tax is. (Times the figure you pay by on a calculator by 10 and hit % or by 20 and hit %), and then the real truth will be apparent. Gov. Christie pretends to be on the side of the middle class.

Absolutely Grandparocks!!! This is just the point I had hoped someone would have made yesterday, but no one he picked asked and I wasn't called on. A 10% income tax cut would be very little, I so agree. Sounds good, but people need to realize the truth. It would be eaten up immediately with other increases, in food, health care,TOLLS, etc Also, being on a fixed income now, for me, 10% of nothing is still nothing! If Gov. Christie is REALLY serious about giving the people of New Jersey actual relief, then give us the 10% cut in our PROPERTY TAXES so we can at least get SOME help in trying to stay in our homes!!

If all the companies keep moving out of New Jersey you will not be able to afford your real estate taxes. Don't you get it. The amount of money that the State is pulling in needs to be reduced. The amount of money going out needs to be cut in half. It is absurd. I am not middle class and contribute plenty to the State. What happens when I move out of the state like many many of our neighbors have done. As I see it with all due respect is we the democrats are killing the goose that lays the golden egg. They continue to beat it with comments like earning money is a bad thing. What happens when the Goose is dead or fly's away. It is happening all day every day. Why is it so hard to figure out that a flat tax is the only way to go. If you earn more you pay more. Whatever it is 20,30 10, percent. I do not want my fellow New Jersey residents to be cheated or pay my share. Wake up and realize the people are not the problem. If politicians have to deal out bad news and threaten their re election or record they won't. They will sell us out. That is the real problem.

So Christie considers Acropolis a friend, I guess just like he considered Ritacco a friend. He has pretty bad choice in friends. But than again he is a loser as well. How about letting the millionaire take through already? I know you don't want to see your close personal friends actually having to pay anything extra.

What many of us are waiting for is to see him break up the mob
running Ocean County ... but that's dreaming that he will ever include
THEM in his plans ... the list is huge therefore I will generalize.
Double-triple dippers who stand to make huge incomes when THEY
retire ... funny how the general private sector does not see the packages
given these cronies ... over 600,000 folks in Ocean and we have to
stand for a small and powerful group to run US out of New Jersey or
at least Ocean County ... under so called caps the loop holes allow
for millions in costs for the "well connected" ...
Like Romney but not sure if he should get involved with OC-GOP ...

Chief Wahoo. I believe you need a lesson in economics. Use your example above with the median $60,000 saving $660. I agree, not a lot of money. But consider the guy that owns a business and makes $1 Million a year. He might employee four people who each make $60,000 year. He certainly pays more than 5.5% in income taxes. A 10% savings could be meaningful to him. So much in fact, he might be able to add another employee who makes $60,000/year. That is how you stimulate an economy long term.

In the private sector, if any of us were hired by a company that had troubles to fix those problems and that company gave us four years to do it and we didn't, what do you think would happen? We would be fired! Could you imagine begging the boss for four more years to "finish" the work? Anybody can talk tough and put on a great public face, but as for doing the job he was elected to do, he's a giant fail. Another bad decision by me in the voting booth!

When times are tough: the non-performers/sick-time abusers/slackers are the first to be let go.
Here's what happens in the public sector in NJ:
The last hired is the first to be let go. One can abuse the sick time policy and do little or no work. But he is protected under civil service/union/seniority rules.
The FACT of the matter is that is what Governor Christie is dealing with!

All I'm reading is a bunch of complaints here.

I was at the Town Hall yesterday, and Christie did a great job. One thing about him, is he speaks his mind, and I like that; he's a straight shooter. Besides that, he has a great sense of humor.

For those who haven't seen any difference since he's been in office, you must have your head in the sand. Look at the pension and benefit reforms he's managed to enact; not all he wanted, or all that was needed, but he made some progress to slow tax increases. Remember, to enact these reforms, he had to fight those who wanted to continue making promises they couldn't keep just to get re-elected, and had to take on the powerful public unions.

Isn't he puching for lowering taxes, or am I dreaming?

There are a lot of folks who dislike him, especially public workers, but let's face it, he walked into a tough situation, and took it on.

So at least give him some credit.

Hey Oceancounty: I was there too. Yes, he shoots from the hip but loves to brag about the fact that he does, too! I'm not saying he hasn't helped people....he has...here and there. Pension reform? Sort of, but he could have been handled better,. AND... his record on REAL REFORM is abysmal at best. Every Governor I can remember has promised property tax relief and not one has kept this promise! What goes on here? I think we all know. Money talks, and you know what walks.
He promised property tax relief and is pushing an income tax cut (crumb) instead. That's not my idea of reform. I never said he wasn't a nice man. He may very well be. However, I want a Governor who will actually DO what is needed.
And I was not a fan of Corzine. I was at the Ritacco Center when that debacle took place. But Christie can try to do something about that, instead of worrying about his friendships with Romney and the upcoming campaign. He could have stayed another half hour had he really wanted to.

They tried to leave the middle school fat jokes back in the middle school, but as luck would have it, the net broke and the Governor escaped anyway. I guess the Brick Township schools need more repair work than even they knew.

No, lets not leave the fat jokes in middle school. He is a bad example for the youth of NJ. He's a fat, big mouthed bully who couldn't physically get himself in or out of a sports car. Being 450 pounds isn't funny, he can't even control himself yet he can control our state? We won't be having these discussions much longer, he's a heart attack waiting to happen. Asking his vitals to function for that ginormous body is like asking a Smart car to pull a loaded 53 foot trailer. When you're this overweight, you're supposed to just stay quiet.. not call attention to your disgusting presence.

I would donate $100 of my own funds towards his favorite charity to see him in a customized Smart car with one seat in the middle.

Anybody else want to kick in and make this happen ?

something to remember in the words of eleanor roosevelt - " great minds discuss ideas - average minds discuss events - small minds discuss people " - governor grow up !!!

The Governor roasted Corzine over State borrowing, but proposes to do the same
rather than further cut spending ... State unemployment remains higher than the
national average ... His budget revenue estimates remain well under expectations -
HIS - but he wants to cut taxes with revenue NJ doesn't have ... State GNP productivity remains in the bottom 10% of all States, while foreclosures continue
at a rate higher than that of the Nation ... Property taxes rose well over 2% on average this past year ... is NJ better off than it was 2 1/2 years ago?

Oh goodie..another tax cut, funded by borrowing.
Christie Todd Whitman tried that...and when the bill came due it cost us 38 BILLION DOLLARS. Christie must be truly desperate, if he doesn't think we'll notice.

And no...my family Isn't better off. Property taxes are up, and so was our income tax, though we made LESS money...the only "Jersey Miracle" is that people haven't stormed the governor's mansion with pitchforks.

And he will NEVER take a "real question". He packs the meetings with supporters so he is doesn't have to think. Simple.

Another name from the past. Another Christie!!!!! Yep!!!! She borrowed from our school pensions to make herself look good. Sound famaliar??????? Then put a horse on her property and called it a farm. More benefits for her from the State. But this is in the past and what we should be concentrating on is the new Christie who is really doing our state in with his so-called great ideas to help out his cronies.

And yes, I truly believe that his press conferences are padded with only Christie supporters. You mean to tell me there was not one person there who disapproved of what he was saying? Oh, I forgot!!!! Those people never got an opportunity to speak. Typical.

Chrisie Todd Whitman borrowed money from the unions this other Christie is trying to throw under the bus. This money has to be repaid but it seems our Governor is trying to welsh on the promise of repayment. Our Governor has not learned that you don't function today by borrowing against tomorrow and that is exactly what his vaunted tax cut would do. It may bring us more revenue in the future. NOT!

I didnt realize that Christie was the reason Roche cut jobs. Just like it was his fault that it snowed 3 feet in NJ while he was on vacation. All of you just bash him instead of actually stating facts here. If you know so much and have all the answers then maybe its time you run. Instead of bashing everything and everyone go make the changes you say should and could be done. I would love to see how you make it happen.

While I think Christie is a self-absorbed blowhard whose purpose is to enrich himself, his family, and his cronies, I have to agree with Sean that Christie had little or nothing to do with Roche skipping town. When will the sheeple of this state and country figure out that those people known as corporations do what is best for themselves and their shareholders when making these decisions? Like a virus, they will kill their host (the middle class). Those who run the corporations will cash out long before the middle class has collapsed enough to affect the bottom line of these parasites.

Hoffman-LaRoche is a giant Swiss company that is closing down in NJ and moving operations to Europe. They are not moving to another state. It is a corporate move; can't blame high taxes in NJ nor can you blame Christie for this. The plant is OLD. This is a business decision that would have been made regardless of who or what party was in office in Trenton.

This site is a great way to vent and dialogue, which is find, but put your words into action as well, and just maybe we will all reap the reward and be the better for it!

Christie is a bully, interested in coming across as a fighter for the people, when in fact he will run this state into the ground, same as Whitman, who never paid for anything either.

P.S. Project Bluebeam, who do you think hires people? Remember when we had a Boatbuilding industry, glass and ceramics and other light industry all in South Jersey? I do. Want to know what happened to it? It all went elsewhere. There is no reason that the advanced glass used in callphone and iPad screens cannot be made in New Jersey, in fact we'd probably be the best place in the world to do it, except the cost of running a business here is so high the industries all moved out. Want them back? Lower the cost. It is the only way to get the jobs back. That's just reality.

So let me get this straight, you want America to be a low cost labor payer similar to India and China just to get manual labor industries back into our country? How about we spend more money bringing up the level of general IQ in this country so that we can get people to THINK and invent and create new specialty products never before seen that the world will want to import from us. How about we use our brains instead of our brawn and pay people for their intelligence and expertise. If we started now, we might be somewhere in a few decades. If we follow groups like the Tea Party people, we'll go backwards to around the 1776 era like they desire.

I'd like to know how all the rich people leaving the state for lower taxes manage to continue their $1M+ incomes from afar. Someone please tell me. Or are they all telecommuting? The Tea Party's reason to be is to ferment hositlity and Christie is a great practioner of that. Sure, lets conduct discussion of fiscal policy in the gutter, that sounds like a great idea! While we're at it, let's call insurance purchase a tax....that's red meat for The Tea Party. And call Holder a murderer who plans homicide as an excuse to take away our guns! Our Guns! Red meat, all this hostile talk is nothing but red meat to inflame the base, who they must think of as automatons with no capacity for critical thinking....oh yeah.....The Texas Republican Party has a plank against teaching critical thinking skills in Texas schools......is ANYBODY SURPISED?
