There is a mandatory noon evacuation for all Point Borough residents who live south of Bridge Avenu or on waterways, such as Barnegat Bay, Beaver Dam Creek or lagoons.
That is the dictate coming from Borough emergency and government officials who met this morning at Borough Hall.
Also, all businesses in the entire town must close by 3 p.m.
The evacuation order applies to all residents who live on any waterway, including Barnegat Bay, Beaver Dam Creek or lagoons.
Point Borough High School is open as a shelter. Public schools are closed Monday and Tuesday.
The public is urged to make all non-emergency phone calls, including calls about evacuating, to (732) 899-4935.
On Sunday, officials had contemplated a 4 p.m. Monday deadline for evacuation of vulnerable areas. However, at the Monday morning meeting, officials said the forecast for heavy bands of rain and strong wind is now showing an earlier time frame and it would be better to get residents out earlier.

Did non-public school families receive an Instant Alert message? I'm sure they didn't. As wonderful as Denise's reporting is, it's irresponsible for residents to have to depend on Patch, Facebook, and word-of-mouth for an evacuation in two hours.

Emergency responders go door to door to alert those that are required to evacuate. They did during Hurricane Irene. My son is an EMT and he worked his butt off telling people to leave. Police went around asking people to leave. And Heather, if you feel in danger you should leave. You shouldn't wait for someone else to decide if we are in harms way.

Diane, the Borough's mandate is for all areas south of Bridge to evacuate even if you are not on or near water. Heather, only public school families are registered in the Honeywell instant alert system only because the district has not really had a way to get a message out to residents with no public school children to register for the system. I'm sure Borough workers and volunteers are also doing all they can to get the word out and will work with people and give them a chance if they find residents not leaving who should leave.

Perhaps it irresponsible to depend on others for the safety of you and your family.......put your big boy pants on...turn on the tv, radio, computer....anything at all .....

I agree we all need to take personal responsibility and abide by the evacuation. My point is perhaps our town should have a town wide system for emergency notification- one that doesn't put volunteers at risk.

Of course we all should take responsibilty, however, in todays sophisticated world of electronics, all towns should have the reverse 911 system in place to advice ALL residents of the towns emergency plan! Amazingly I did recieve a call, however it ironically was

I agree totally with your comment. Every taxpaying resident of this town MUST be informed of emergency planning and updates. Thank you for the positive comment. Lets hope the police department take action and adopt the reverse 911 system that the other surrounding towns already have in place.
