A roundup of Point Boro High School sports

The Point Boro ice hockey team has found its stride this season, rolling through its schedule so far with just one loss and one tie -- which came Friday night, a 3-3 draw with Ocean Township.

Netminder Dylan Moran made 18 saves against Ocean for the Panthers, who sit in the middle of the Shore Conference D Division standings with 3 wins and no losses in the division.

The Panthers have been strong on offense, scoring 4.85 goals per game, while giving up just 1.92 goals per game.

A loss to Wall to open the season is a distant memory, as the Panthers have been undefeated since.

The Shore Conference and state playoff cutoff dates are still a couple of weeks away, but Point Boro appears to be hitting on all cylinders.

In wrestling: The Panthers received the ninth seed in the Shore Conference Tournament, which pits them against Manalapan at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Round of 16 at Jackson Memorial.

Point Boro (13-3) is undefeated in Shore Conference Class C Central, and is coming off a weekend quad at Barnegat where the Panthers beat Monsignor Donovan comfortably, edged Lacey 32-30 and lost to Barnegat 36-24.

Ryan Harter (113), Ryan Budzek (120) and Andrew Matter (220) have been solid for the Panthers, whose only other losses have been to Nutley and Howell earlier this month.

In girls basketball: Point Boro (10-5) has hit a few bumps in its travels through the 2011-2012 season. The biggest bump has been Manasquan, however, as the Panthers have now lost to the Warriors twice this season.

Point Boro has showed some mettle as well, beating Rumson 61-57 a week after the Bulldogs were victorious.

Kelly Hughes continues to lead Point Boro offensively, and finished with 17 points in the loss to Manasquan on Tuesday. The Panthers continue to challenge themselves, with a trip to the Kennedy Tournament on tap this weekend after a meeting with Wall on Friday.

In boys basketball: The Panthers (8-5) have faced some challenges but are continuing their push through divisional play. Point Boro lost to Manasquan 67-60 on Tuesday after beating the Warriors the first time the two teams met. Shaune Cook (22 points) and Kyle McGarry (19) have been consistent presences for the Panthers, who face Wall on Friday.

In swimming: Philip Binaco won the 500 freestyle and finished fifth in the 100 backstroke for the Panthers boys at the Ocean County Championships at the Ocean County YMCA.

For the girls, freshman Carolyn Kern was second in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, anchored the 200 medley relay which took sixth and the sixth-place 400 freestyle relay for Point Boro.

Anne Skimmons took third in both the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, Sydney Brannick was eighth in the 100 backstroke and Allie Peters and Megan Poland were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke.
