The body of Marine Cpl. Christopher Monahan, who was killed in action in Afghanistan Nov. 26, is escorted home
With an honor guard of retired Marines standing by, the body of Marine Cpl. Christopher M. Monahan Jr. was returned to Ocean County on Tuesday.
An escort of nearly 100 motorcycles, comprised of cyclists from the Legion Riders, the Patriot Riders, the Patriot Guard, as well as NJ state troopers, police from Toms River and police and firefighters from Island Heights, guarded and guided the path of Monahan's return, from the Delaware Memorial Bridge to Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home on Main Street in Toms River.
Monahan, 25, a 2006 Central Regional High School graduate who grew up in Ocean Gate but more recently had lived in Island Heights, was killed in action on Nov. 26 in Afghanistan's Helmand Province when the truck he was riding in struck an improvised explosive device.
Two dozen family members, some quietly crying, watched as a Marine Corps detail removed Monahan's flag-draped casket from the hearse that brought him from Dover Air Force Base, and carried it up the steps, where they placed it on a casket carriage and moved it inside the funeral home.
Monahan is survived by his wife Sarah, and his children Nathan, Kierlyn and Caleb; his parents, Christopher M. Monahan Sr. and Sandra Monahan; his maternal grandparents, Lenny and Linda Adams of Toms River, and paternal grandmother, Leah Monahan of Bayville. He has a brother, Matt, and sister, Kaitlyn as well as extended family.
A viewing is set for Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and his funeral is set to begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Barnabas Roman Catholic Church in Bayville. He will be buried at Brig. General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to the Rotary Club of Toms River, P.O. Box 751, Toms River, NJ 08754, www.hometownheros.org or Toys for Tots, according to his obituary in the Asbury Park Press.

Sorry, but I think it is highly exploitive and intrusive to post pictures here of the family grieving and of the casket. To show the fellow marines standing there or to show flags is one thing, but these people deserve the right to grieve without their photo being taken and published.

@ Uncle Moe,
just one question.................are you a member of our armed services now? Are you a veteran? This young man died for the cause of FREEDOM, oil had nothing to do with it. It's people like yourself that do not understand what it is to be in a conflict situation, seeing and hearing all the carnage that goes about you and you call it oil, political oil at that. You make me sick.

Unfortunately, those are the breaks of being in the military. People will go to war and can get killed. Those that join the military and especially those with husbands/wives/kids have to really think about the fact that they could get killed in many different ways and leave a family behind. Mates also have to really think about and accept the fact that their military mate can go to war and can get killed. Also, they have to understand that if something happens, there will be all types of news reports and pictures will be taken. So, with all that said, if people are going to be "proud of their military mate/family member," they have to be able to accept anything with it being a shock and to ask "now what am I going to do???"

Lew;
But for men like this brave Hero you'd still be British, oppressed as so many were by the "Great Empire" who created the 'Concentration Camp'.
Thomas Jefferson wrote "Freedom requires the occasional sacrifice of Patriot's Blood that we may remain free."

You are really low with this statement. He served YOU and the rest of us, no matter who sent him there or for what reason!!!
The rest of us are thankful for the service of our military and always pray that they will return home safely. It is a risk, but not one to be taken so lightly as in your statement.

people get killed everyday on the streets of this country unfortunatltly mostly because of bad drug deals. Everyone of these people has families. The difference in them getting killed and a soldier getting killed is the soldier lost his life defending your freedom so you could write stupid crap like this.If it were your family member which would you be more proud of? Your family member fighting for your freedom or fighting to keep his drugs.Think about that before you open your big trap again!

1st Cav,
Just making a statement from a previous comment. As for your comment, getting killed in a freak accident at a place of work does not happen often. After all, not everyone works in a dangerous coal mine. What we are talking about is being a soldier/marine in a dangerous war zone where rocket attacks happen, ambushes are made, and IEDs are planted (just to name a few interesting possibilities). We are not talking about stocking shelves at a local Shop Rite. Now, to those that have lost family in freak accidents, I can imagine them saying "how could this happen???" However, if a military mates asks that of an incident in a war zone, isn't that bit oblivious?? Oh well...

God Bless Corporal Monahan and his service and dedication to his family, friends and nation. Semper Fi.
Kaitlyn and Tracie, please just ignore comments of the few who have shown their hate here. These poor low lives have nothing better to do than write hateful comments about people they don't even know. Not one of these haters would have even a modicum of the bravery or character that Corporate Monahan possessed. You have my condolences on your loss.

A young man died in service of his country and I admire his courage. Soldiers do not decide the battle. His heroism begins when he answers the call of his government. Politics count but not on the day of a hero's burial.

Chris,
You may not be here with us as we press forth in this deployment physically but I know you are waiting at the gates to bum another cigarette. You still owe me a pack, man. So many hours spent with a beer in hand at the Barracks, brother, you will never be forgotten. I'll leave a carton for you when we get back. Thank you for everything, Chris.
