Contractors and residents were able to return to the barrier island on Thursday, Dec. 6, but traffic was light at the Mantoloking Road checkpoint at the foot of the Mantoloking Bridge in Brick.

A Brick Township police officer at the scene said the late afternoon announcement yesterday may have made scheduling contractors and other home repair crews difficult to do on such short notice today.  The officer said he expects the checkpoint tomorrow to be much busier.

Brick Township residents and contractors are able to return to their homes south of the Mantoloking Bridge but have to be off the barrier island by 4 p.m.

"In the event NJNG completes this process prior to December 7th and the area is deemed safe, it will be re-opened to the public without delay." Now this is a quote from the Brick Township web page and I congradulate them for getting it done early. Did the the gas company tell the town they were making good progress? Was the opening a crack of dawn development this morning? Was their a reason I read this posting at 8:40 am on the patch and the offical Bring town web page is still not making mention of it? I would ask that the town please post current information to help lead the rebuilding. As my son always says to me on days like today "Let's go, daylight is burning!" Let me point out there are only 172 days till Memorial Day. Lets all work together to make every one count. February is not good rebuilding weather at the beach.

Thanks for your comment, Don. Patch only found out about today's re-opening late yesterday when police sent out an announcement. As an additional FYI... The Normandy Beach section of the township will be closed off on Dec. 10. This is verbatim from the police announcement: On December 10, 2012 an area of the barrier island will be closed to residents and contractors due to work being completed by New Jersey Natural Gas. This area will be all streets South of Jeanette Dr. on both the ocean and bay sides of the island. These streets will include Jeanette Dr., portions of Sunset Blvd., 9th Ave, 8th Ave, 7th Ave, 6th Ave, 5th Ave, Ocean Terrace, Rt. 35 North and Southbound, south of Jeanette Dr., Normandy Dr., Ellison Dr., Broad Ave, Arrow Ct. and Lake Ct. This closure should only be in effect for Monday December 10th while NJNG completes their work.

I can have a house built in 4 weeks and I can pitch a tent in 5. I can also sleep on my boat. Now if you are a woman in need of a 6 bedroom house I can't help you but that will remain you issue not mine. If you truely loved the beach you would understand. Bigger is not better, just bigger and more work.
