Point Beach Chamber Honors First Responders

Installation Dinner Dance on Feb. 9 at Martell's

The Point Pleasant Beach Chamber of Commerce will honor local first responders at its Installation Dinner Dance at Martell's Tiki Bar at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 9.

Members of Point Beach police, fire, first aid, emergency management and public works departments, who worked long hours to rescue and assist numerous residents and business people during and after Superstorm Sandy, will be honored at the event.

Tickets are $60 per person. Please contact the Chamber of Commerce at 732-899-2424 to reserve your seat.

Regarding tickets for those being honored, each of the groups honored receives two free tickets, said Carol Vaccaro, Chamber Executive Director. In addition, all volunteers honored can purchase their tickets "at cost" which is $40, a $20 discount off the $60 price, Vaccaro said.

"I wish we could give at-cost tickets to everyone, but we're a non-profit and we simply can't afford to do that," Vaccaro said.

Most of the local first responders being honored are volunteers, yet they have to pay for a ticket so that they can be afforded the privilege of being honored. Doesn't sit well with me. I think I'll spend my money at another event where the money raised will go directly to those affected by Sandy and not to an organization who is in the business of business.

Congratulations to all of the first responders, however, for a job well above and beyond. They are special people.
