Point Beach Organization Meeting on Jan. 5

Andy Cortes will be sworn in as new council member

The Point Beach Council Organization meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 5.

The Point Beach Council voted unanimously on Tuesday night for the scheduling of the organization meeting, as part of a vote for a "consent agenda" that contained numerous agenda items.

However, at least a few council members were not delighted about the date.

Council members Stephen Reid and William Mayer asked Mayor Vincent Barrella why the meeting was not Jan. 1, which has often been the date for the council's organization meeting every year.

Mayer said, "I was disappointed my schedule wasn't consulted."

Barrella said Council member Michael Corbally, who was absent Tuesday night, will not be back from a vacation by Jan. 1, so he postponed the meeting until Jan. 5.

Reid said that was a shame because the family of Andy Cortes would all be in town on Jan. 1, but not on Jan. 5.

Reid and Cortes were elected to two, three-year council seats in the November general election and will be sworn in at the organization meeting. A municipal organization meeting is when newly elected members of the local governing body are sworn in and other officials, including professionals such as the attorneys and engineer, are appointed.

Republicans Reid and Cortes defeated independent Tom Davis and Democrats Sharon Cadalzo and Barry Moffett.

Barrella said he knew about the scheduling situation for Cortes' family and had talked to Cortes, but he felt the most important consideration needed to be scheduling a date when all council members could be present.

Barrella said that the postponement is not unheard of. For example, he noted, in 2008, a member of council was out of town, so the meeting was postponed until Jan. 5.

Later in the meeting, during the public comment portion, Cortes said, "It's OK, I'll just have to make sure that all of my daughters can be in town in three years."

How disappointing for Mr. Cortes. How disappointing, too, that the New Year is about to start and already these guys are playing games. Corbally must've known that the Reorg meeting is traditionally on January 1. What was so important that he couldn't attend that meeting? And, why is Corbally's attendance so much more important than Mayer's or Cortes' ability to have his family be present? Corbally missed the last meeting, and that didn't seem to be a problem. As for 2008, Barrella was sworn in that year along with 2 other Council members, and what I remember hearing is that it was one of the new members who couldn't make it on January 1 which is why the date was changed, which made more sense to me than this year's nonsense. Stop picking on Cortes. He's a good guy and obviously the voters like him.

The reason that the 2008 reorg meeting was scheduled for January 5 of that year is exactly the same reason it is January 5 this year. The only difference is which Mike was away on vacation. In 2008 it was Mike Loughran, this year it is Mike Corbally. The 2008 date was not selected based upon the schedule of the new members of the governing body that year, nor based upon the convenience of their family's.

"And, why is Corbally's attendance so much more important than Mayer's or Cortes' ability to have his family be present?"

Corbally is a councilmember. Family is not. Pretty simple.

And even councilmembers are allowed to go on vacation at times.

Trisha, the Reorg meetingshave beentraditionally held January1 of each year for decades. The one exception(2008) was done in consideration forthe new officials being sworn in. That is something that has always been the case. Consideration for the newly elected officials and their families hasalways been a priority. Usually the ENTIRE governing body discussed the date and time in advance and ALL members work in agreement. Also, appointments were dicussed in advance by the entire governing body as well. January 1 has been an established long time tradition in Pt Pleasant Beach. Everyone on the governing body knows that and should make it their responsibity to attend. Unless they have some type of unforseen emergency that is the way it has worked and very well.
I feel very bad for Andy that his family can not all attend this very big day in his life.
I'm thinking the Mayor needs Mike C in attendance because he needs Mike's vote to insure the Mayor gets all the appointments such as boro Attorney, that he wants.
Once again, tradition has fallen victim to the political power struggle in Pt Beach.

Dan Hennessy, the head of the political family serpent, has reared his head from the shadows to offer some folksy wisdom from a time when all things were done right. Soon to follow, I'm sure, will be two cents from the past club president daughter and the former councilman son. But, this time, Mayor Hennessy is correct. Cortes has the right to share his time in the spotlight with his family since the opportunity will never present itself again. His arrogance, combined with Mayer's smugness and Reid's buffoonery, will go a long way to serve us well. I have an idea. Let's make it even better. Let's also strip the council of all of the other members and replace them with Cervino, Dyer and Sean Hennessy. They'll get it right! I know it. Mayor Hennessy is so right. We do need Cortes in office ASAP but the former Mayor needs to be honest about it. Cortes is Mayor Hennessy's only hope that residents will forget his son's dubious decision-making and questionable intelligence. Go Cortes. If you succeed, there's an even better county job on the horizon for you.

As noted above Mayor Hennessy, the 2008 reorganization meeting was held on January 5 because sitting Councilman Mike Loughran was away on vacation, not because of the schedule of the myself or any of the newly elected officials or their families.

Mayor, contrary to your statement that I need Mike Corbally at the meeting to insure my appointments you will recall (and I would like to assume that you simply have forgotten although I am skeptical of that) that I have until the end of January to put forth appointments. You will also recall that if I don't recommend an appointment on January 1, or for that matter January 5, the prior appointees hold over and continue to function in their positions. Thus, if appointments are not made on January 1 or this year January 5, I have until February 1 to make those recommendations. The only thing that has fallen victim here are the facts to your incorrect statements. It is interesting that you bring up the borough attorney given your track record appointing borough attorneys.

Finally, I too feel bad for Andy and hope his family members can rearrange their schedule so that they can attend, the same way you would like Councilman Corbally to (and I guess the same way you would have liked MIke Loughran to) rearrange their schedules.

Really? I would hope he would not consider this a very big day in his life. To make this a big deal in this dinky little town. I would hope his graduation, a day of Marriage or the birth of his child or children is what he would consider a very big day in his life. Hmmmmm, maybe it is? He might get a county position or boardwalk position out of this down the road. @ Dan, What you and your son has done& able to get away with? Short term memory, Ahhhh! Typical of you and your family who always like to set fuel to the fire. How many have fallen victim to your political power struggle in Pt. Beach....Plenty for sure.

A Resident...I don't have a problem with councilmembers taking vacation. Government is designed to go forward when all members cannot attend. That's why there's a quorum needed, not the full Governing Body. But, if this meeting is so important that everyone needs to be there, and the meeting is always held on January 1, then Corbally should've arranged his vacation plans accordingly, not the other way around. The Reorganization meeting seems to be the time for a new start, and personally, I think our Govering Body really does need to take a new approach to how they do business. The Mayor's performance at that one meeting, when he publicly called Mr. Bassinder "a little man" is repulsive. This was the chance to have a fresh start, and it looks to me as if it's going to be the same old mess. Being sworn into office is an important event, and the fact that Mr. Cortes wanted to have his family members there just shows me how much he values this event and how much he feels honored to become a member of he Council. If he feels that becoming a Council member, especially of this town, is an honor, then I think that is a feeling that should've been encouraged.

Trisha M., if you read the article (and a few posts here) you will quickly learn the meeting has NOT always been on January 1.

I know Andy Cortes. If you believe not having his daughter at the swearing in will discourage Andy from doing a great job....you don't know Andy.

A Resident, I really don't understand why you're choosing to argue with me about this. I'm disappointed for Mr. Cortes that his daughter will be unable to attend his swearing in, namely because Councilman Corbally's vacation seems to take precedence. As for what's written in the article and posts, all I've seen is that in 2008, the Reorganization meeting was held on a different date. I see the same thing in common between 2008 and the upcoming 2013 meeting, namely that Barrella has been the Mayor for both. I understand that Mayor Barrella claims that the 2008 meeting was held on a different day due to the absence of then-Councilman Loughran, but that just doesn't make sense to me. Loughran was a Councilman for something like 17 years. He managed to be in town for all of those years but one? And, that one year happened to coincide with the year that Barrella and Tooker were sworn into office? Both Barrella and Tooker are teachers, and it's pretty common practice for teachers go on vacation during Christmas break. But really, I wouldn't begrudge them wanting to change the date of the Reorg meeting during the year that they were sworn in, allowing them to enjoy their vacations and be present for the Reorg meeting. I'm sure that Mr. Cortes will serve us well, despite these rocky beginnings, and I truly appreciate his post here, but again, am concerned about the future, based on Mayor Barrella's post thereafter.

Totally agree with Dan H. on this. Just another example of the games this Mayor plays with everything he touches. Hopefully this is the last year of his perceived reign with his two minions up re election this year and council control hinging on their re election. Hopefully the town will see what an absolute incompetent fool Ms. Tooker is and will wash her away next November. As for Mr. Corbally, he will know better not to run because he is a bigger disgrace than the Mayor and the town people know it.

Happy Holidays to all.

outofthebeach4now, If you agree with Dan H. on this then you must have been big part of the political nonsense and disgrace that has been going on in this town for years. You all need to look in the mirror and the damage you all caused. The town people know its the same. It never changes, just different disgrace politicians that we the people fall victim to over and over again.

Unfortunately the answer is "Yes" and it should not be. The town is a mess because it is and has been run by disgusting people who lie and cheat to get their own way. None of them are going to be happy until they run the town into the grown and everyone will be blaming and pointing fingers at each other. I feel sorry for both the residents and the businesses with the bozo's who have been running this town.

@ Trisha & Dan, Thank you for the comments about feeling bad that one of my daughters won't be able to be there. I didn't know the reason for the date change until it was mentioned at the meeting. I believe it is correct to have all council members present at the reorg meeting although I do feel arrangements could have been made to keep the long honored tradition of being on the 1st. But I'm good with it! I am excited to be on council and look forward to doing what's right for the town.
@ JS Grinch, You need to get to know me as you are confusing arrogance with some tongue-in-cheek humor. And what I actually said was "I will just have to make sure they (my daughters) can all be here in 3 years." I know, it's the same thing as was written in the article. All I can say is I hope I do well enough to have the opportunity in 3 years to have my entire family here.
@King Neptune, You're 100% correct! There are bigger issues to handle than my family...that's why I'm ok with it.

Mr. Cortes was made aware of the reason for scheduling the reorganization meeting for January 5, days before the last council meeting.

Thanks Andy, good attitude to begin your term. Best of luck, your thinking will be a plus on Council.
Mayor, I fully understand the process for appointing the boro attorney. I only used him as an example of appointments on New Years Day. As you are well aware there are a multitude of other appointments and assignments for council members to various committees. Most traditionally need four votes to confirm. Without Mike Corbally in attendance your coming up one short for providing you the tie breaker to control these appointments.
All I was saying is for a long long time these assignments were discussed, decided realtively amicably by the entire council working together right after Thanksgiving.
BTW Vince, you have developed quite a track record yourself with appointing Boro Attorneys.
Understandable somewhat as we both understand how important the boro attorney can be.

Andy, Have someone tape it for the family members that can't attend. What ever decisions you make on council make them your own. Please don't be a puppet to anyone or in exchange for your own personal gains or interests. I can tell you the towns people will surely know. They are far from stupid as some apparently think. Don't fall into that trap. So which is it? Did you know and made aware of the reason for scheduling or not?

I realize that Mayor Hennessy has gotten into the habit of ready fairy tales and fables to his grandchildren but he needs to get out of the "Three Little Pigs" mode. He needs to put into context his whimsical recollection of backroom cooperation from former councils that he was a member of or Mayor with for over 20 years. Back then the Republicans had control of each and every vote. You really don't need much in the way of cooperation when each member marches step with the other in accordance with directions from Toms River. We all know that Barrella is a vindictive blowhard with poor people skills. But that has little to do with the fact that by law he has certain rights of appointment. They are the same ones that Major Hennessy took advantage of for so many years. I guess the Boro Attorney is an important appointment. Council members all need him and they all fight over who it is so that their own personal selection will protect their own personal interests. Somehow the interests of the community are always secondary. And that included Mayor Hennessy, when year in and year out his appointment was the designee of the Toms River political machine, the same machine that got him out of doing oil changes and into a cushy freeloader office. Time for him to finish the "Three Little Pigs" which appears to be the only reality he now knows.

Correct. It is a crying shame what has been able to go on in this town. The interest of the towns people and community children is always secondary. Why should we continue to fall victims to the unethical political choices that are being made in both the town and schools. The towns people know it. There is so much wrong going on in todays world and we still have those who questions, Why? Really?

Until the Spring Lake wannabees or "think they are" residents of The Point get their heads out of the beach sand, it will continue. All of the elected choices are poor. When it comes to the town election it's like picking execution by firing squad or hanging. You are getting a choice but you're gonna die just the same. The first step is removing the bad seeds. The sooner the Hennessy's move the better we will all be. They're like bad viruses that keep on resurfacing.
