Andy Cortes and Stephen Reid to be sworn in as council members

Republicans Andy Cortes and Stephen Reid, who won two, three year Point Beach council seats in November's general election, will be sworn in at today's organization meeting.

Cortes is a newcomer to council and Reid won after being appointed to council in December 2011.

The meeting will be held at 1 p.m. at Borough Hall, 416 New Jersey Ave.

The annual organization meeting is also when the top officials of the local, volunteer fire department are sworn in and council committee and professional appointments are made, including municipal attorney and auditor. Here is the meeting agenda.

I wish both of them the best of luck. It is my hope that all the council will realize they are all there for the same goal. To protect the town's way of life, and by example, restore peace and harmony to the Family community of Point Pleasant Beach.

Congratulations to Mr. Cortes and Mr. Reid. You have a BIG job ahead of you. Please be the voices of reason on this town council until we can vote out those who bring embarrassment to our town. Return respect to our community. Continue to support the businesses in our community.

And please know - that despite the obnoxious level of discourse you may have to endure in public and in forums like the comments to this article - you have the support of the majority of the people of Point Pleasant Beach.

Don't you get it? The only reason Reid supports businesses if businesses (financially) support Reid.

If you are delusional enough to believe that those two will be the voice of reason in a town that is already intellectually challenged you are in for a rude awakening. You'd have a better chance of getting some intelligent decision making, albeit a very low level of intelligent decision making, with one of the Hennessy's back in office. These two guys are off the charts.

You're not going to be getting any real respect from any of these phonies. They're just telling you what you want to hear enough times so that you actually start believing it. Wake up and smell the sea breeze!

Oh, now, Mr. Grinch, how you do like to play with the posts. My post was directed at FDR. Why? Because, I was obviously trying to bite my tongue as to what I could say. You like to be oh so nasty and critical of a certain group of people, as your post history demonstrates. Your posts are very one-sided in that regard. But, even you must've been able to see the irony of at least one of FDR's posts, you know, the one where FDR writes: "The people from and running this town is definitely intellectually challenged..." Daddy would be proud of me for biting my tongue on that one. You just keep posting your venom, as I am sure that you will.

"The Grinch hated Christmas - the whole Christmas season. Now, please don't ask why; no one quite knows the reason. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. Or it could be that his head wasn't screwed on just right. But I think that the most likely reason of all... may have been that his heart was two sizes too small. But, whatever the reason, his heart or his shoes, he stood there on Christmas Eve hating the Whos."

Well atleast it is a change. Point is a great town to live. Now that we can get over the fact that the home values will never be back to what they were (atleast those who flooded) and of how the town will be rowdy in summer. With all the people looking to rent their property now not to mention those doing nothing and selling as is...atleast we still have a strong and wonderful place to live.

JSG, Do not worry, you are not going nuts or unstable. This is the normal reaction from those who are feeding off the public trough while smiling and licking their chops with greed. They always cry jealousy while they continue to be dishonest to all the rest of their friends. Who cares right? No one, they only care about themselves and they wonder why people are so upset. They would rather see it all fall apart then give up something or do something right. They feed off the businesses here too. It never ends. I laugh when they bring the GOP in this dinky town. Really? Get Real. They are all doing and the results are the same.

Hold on just a second, Grinch. There's plenty of blame to go around. In his reorganization comments the mayor alluded to the fact that "the focus of moving forward must not be on what is good for one individual or business regardless of how important that individual or business may be as a political or personal benefactor, but rather on what is good for all of the residents, taxpayers and businesses of Point Pleasant Beach". But he goes no further. No specifics, just banter that means absolutely nothing. Are there those that have not remained faithful to this principle as he further suggests? If so, since it all seems to be blossoming on his watch as mayor, why isn't he doing anything more about it? How about it, Barrella? Courage comes in action, not meaningless speech giving! Do something of substance. The D.C. hustle and hoping and praying aren't cutting it! And, if you don't have the grit, what about Gordon? Whatever happened to "non sibi sed patriae"?

Hi Character 101-You mention Barrella's meaningless speech giving and lack of action--I guess you missed the fact that the Mayor single handedly brokered the deal with the BW that saved the taxpayers $1 Million dollars. We have an effective Mayor and united council at a point in history when we need it most. Encourage it, don't criticize it, give it a chance. A Mr. Happy New Year to all.

You're a delusional crony, Mr. Happy. That united front you mentioned will come to an end within the next two meetings. Budget talks begin and the cheap partisan pot-shots will start flying like embers at a bonfire. You are also mixing apples with oranges. Barrella's comments are meaningless without some type of affirmative action on his part. Otherwise, he's just another political blowhard who spews hollow nonsense. And while you are at it, you might as well get real about Barrella's role in "brokering" the boardwalk deal. Without the intervention of an act of God he wouldn't have been able to do it. This guy is so caustic he couldn't bring two pastors together to agree on a bible verse. If you want to give him credit for recognizing that the storm opened up the door for him and his allies to escape from the untenable position that they were in, be my guest. That's a fair depiction of what really occurred. Anything more than that is a distortion of the facts and makes you sound like you are on happy gas.

Nick Carraway

1:43 pm on Monday, January 7, 2013

To add to Mr. Happy's congratulatory post, the $1 million deal that was struck wasn't done "single handedly by the Mayor." There were two parties sitting at that table, and both parties deserve thanks. Thanks to Jenkinsons for agreeing to pay the $1 million to restore the boardwalk, which they were not legally required to pay. Personally, I thought that it would've been better for the taxpayers if the Council had accepted the $800K, to be paid over 3 years, and avoid all of those litigation costs, all of which happened in 2012. $800K over 3 years seems better to me than $1 million over 20 years. But, I am glad to see that we're moving forward to hopefully restore our boardwalk and our reputation as a tourist town. Let's hope that this spirit of good will can continue.

Mr happy- omg. You have to be Barrella, one of his relatives, or one of his "inner circle " atl ave posse. Barrella didn't broker squat. He was the one pulling the strings when they turned down 800k. Add the litigation fees to that and the one's coming from suits that weren't dropped and you will see our mayor cost us money. Alot of money. And as for tooker and Gertner they had no choice because right now they are out voted. Tooker and Gertner I hope you enjoy your last year involved. Happy you are a jersy shore grinch and a fool.

Character101, you're right in some ways. I am a sentimental fool when it comes to this town, especially its boardwalk. I have to say that I've been pretty concerned about whether certain elected officials would do everything in their power to stop the boards from being rebuilt, but, fingers crossed, it seems the boardwalk will be back soon. I think that's important for our town. People, young and old, walk our boardwalk for exercise and enjoyment, and without it, I think that PPB wouldn't be the same. As for my comment about the "spirit of good will," I guess that my sarcasm didn't come through. Anyone who reads the Mayor's comments from Reorg Day can see that there is no genuine "spirit of good will." He got something he wanted from Jenks, and is being courteous, at least for now. But, how does he feel about Martells? I think the veiled references in his speech make that clear, too. Martells is, after all, continuing the litigation. I'm no fool. I know that a leopard can't change his spots.

Nick, What?A sentimental fool when it comes to this town? Why? Because of its boardwalk? Did I get that right? Everything winds up being all about money and power. Really? Jenkinson made this deal for their own benefit. You said it first, stop the boards...exactly and that is what would have happen which would have cost Jenkinson's to lose even more money. Jenkinson's smart and actually comes a head again. 1 million in 20 years? Equals 50,000 a year. You know what could happen between year 1 and 20. The Mayor and council is a bunch of fools. They were offered $800,000 in 3 years, which they should have taken less all the law suits. It will cost us 1 million to fight all these suits by the time 20 years past. Plus Martell's is not dropping the law suit therefore the town will be paying. We have a cross between Gomer Plye and Hogan's Hero characters running our town. Can you guess who is who?

Bakala, yes, I am a sentimental fool when it comes to this town, especially to the things this town had to offer which made me decide to buy my home here. I guess that if I had inherited my house or moved in with my parents, then I might feel differently. But, my wife and I chose to buy a home here, not just because we liked the look of the house. We liked the town, what the town had to offer to me and, at that time, the children that I hoped to have. Was the $1 million contribution a benefit to Jenkinsons? Yes. But, I don't see why something that benefits Jenkinson's, like helping to rebuild our boardwalk cannot also benefit me. That boardwalk attracted me to this town and, I believe, adds to the value of my home. A portion of that boardwalk is public property. As a taxpayer, I have a responsibility to help maintain our public property, and I appreciate Jenkinsons easing that burden by making this contribution. Yes, in my opinion, it is about power, at least for one side of the table. It seems clear that certain politicians are purely in the business of keeping people in office who will vote a certain agenda. Read the Mayor's Reorg Day speech, where he devotes 2 paragraphs to singing Tooker's praises. Tooker is up for re-election this year. The Barrella bloc tied the midnight bar closings and parking plan to money. 2 years ago, it was special events ordinance. The Barrella folks passed on $50K in 2011 and $800K in 2012. But, I am happy to see the boards return.

Take away "sentimental". You're just a fool. The only way the boardwalk adds value to your home is if your home is on the boardwalk. What adds value are quality schools, a thriving downtown and crime free neighborhoods. That boardwalk may somehow minimally reduce your tax bill but nothing more than that. In fact, in the last few years it is more likely that the negative aspects of the boardwalk may have even reduced the value of your home. If the boardwalk doesn't start marketing their businesses to families you may see an even greater loss its value. Barrella folds, as you put it, are no great shakes. But I'll give them one thing. They weren't grubbing a free meal there after the reorganization meeting.
