Point Boro Schools Closed Until Nov. 12
Automated call from district says office will be open Wed.
Point Borough public schools will be closed until Nov. 12 due to the widespread damage caused by Sandy.
The district is doing automated phone calls now, but some parents may not receive them since some do not have working house or cell phones.
The message also said the district office on Panther Path will be open from 9 a.m. until noon Wednesday to answer questions and that parents should "expect" additional calls or information from their children's schools.
Sandy caused severe flooding in many homes in Bay Head Shores, where Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School is located on Riviera Parkway, and Sunshine Harbor.
At a meeting at Borough Hall on Monday, Schools Superintendent Vincent Smith said he would not start opening schools at various times.
"There are parents who have children in 2 or 3 different buildings, so that would just be chaos," he said. "It's all or nothing. We'll open when we know that all the schools have power and can open safely."
As of that time, Ocean Road School had power. There is no immediate information now regarding whether the other schools all have power.
Smith had also said at the Monday meeting that the days off, which come even before the winter with its untold weather, may have to be made up in April during the spring break.
"I would say to families, 'If you didn't make any plans yet for April, don't,' " Smith said.
Patch will post updates if they are announced by district officials.

I have not been able to reach district officials with the daycare question. But I have messages out to one of them. Melissa, no, not kidding. I got the information directly from the Honeywell automated call since I am also a Borough parent.

You need to get some perspective! There are students and staff members who have lost their homes and belongings, and you are worried about day care costs? Most districts are closing for the week so power can be restored, bus routes can be made safe, and people can get their lives back in order. I applaud Pt. Boro for making this decision in the best interest of families and staff.

Sorry if I offended anyone . Everyone has different opinions. I'm not trying to be selfish. It was a simple question that all.

Message sent out stated Schools closed till 12th and parent teacher conferences for that week are cancelled, I am looking for find out if that means they are planning on having full days of school instead of the half days to go with the conferences, wish they had included that in the message as well.
