Hundreds of Point Borough residents recently collected nearly 600 pairs of shoes for the needy.
The Soles4Souls Shoe Drive, sponsored by the borough Climate Action Committee, in partnership with Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, collected the shoes from the bins placed around town, paired them up and secured and bagged them.
The drop-off sites included the school district administration building on Panther Path; Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School; Ocean Road Elementary School; Memorial Middle School; the Borough High School; the borough branch of the Ocean County library and Borough Hall.
Laura Malta, of the Climate Action Committee, said in a prepared statement that the committee is thanking the borough school district; the borough branch of the library and the municipal government "who all embraced the proposal of this event from the start and pulled together to make this the great accomplishment that it was."
"A special thanks goes out to Joy Blazak and Chris Leitner who each delivered a ton of collected shoes to the Edison warehouse in order to circumvent shipping costs of $1 per pair," the statement says.
"As a town we supported the national America Recycles Day mission and, in the process, helped many hundreds of individuals who are in need of footwear."
Soles4Souls distributes the shoes in numerous sections of the U.S. and in 127 other countries. For more information about where the shoes are distributed, see the Soles4Souls website.
