Polhemus Has Pocketed Nearly A Million In Pension Payouts From Seaside Heights
Polhemus, 84, is running for his tenth term as Ocean County Sheriff
Longtime Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus has collected $929,793 in pension payments since he retired as Seaside Heights police chief back in the 1980s, according to a report by New Jersey Watchdog.
Polhemus, 84, currently receives $165,941 a year — $122,669 in salary plus a $43,272 pension as a retired Seaside Heights police chief, the report states.
"At age 84, Polhemus is the Republican nominee running for a tenth term, the report states. "If he wins, he’ll become a full-fledged, double-dipping pension millionaire."
Polhemus is running against Democrat George "Bob" Armstrong and Independent John McMenamin in the race for Ocean County Sheriff. Polhemus spent 35 years in the Seaside Heights police department.
Both McMenamin and Armstrong also draw pensions as retired law enforcement officers.
McMenamin receives a $90,398 a year tax-free disability pension. McMenamin was injured in a 2006 on-duty accident involving an all-terrain-vehicle as a Stafford Township police officer.
While the state considers him to be "totally and permanently disabled," McMenamin contends his disability would not impair his ability to serve as sheriff, according to New Jersey Watchdog.
"If McMenamin wins, his take from the public trough would go up to $213,067 a year," the report states.
In contrast, Armstrong receives a small state pension of $7,836 a year from his five years of service as an investigator for the State Commission of Investigations and the Division of Criminal Justice.
Armstrong also receives a federal pension as a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel. Federal benefits paid to pensioners are not considered public record.
Polhemus turned down a request from the Ocean County League of Women Voters to debate his opponents. He has not returned numerous calls from Berkeley Patch for an election preview interview.
Polhemus and Undersheriff William Sommeling are among 51 county law enforcement officials in New Jersey who still receive salaries while also drawing a pension, according to a report by New Jersey Watchdog.
The investigation found that 17 sheriffs and 34 undersheriffs collectively earn $9.1 million a year "double dipping" — $3.7 million in retirement pay on top of $5.4 million in salaries — while utilizing loopholes under Gov. Chris Christie's pension reforms.

Disgusting you say??? The disgusting thing is that our consistantly elected liberal state leaders allow such union contracts to be agreed to...How much of these funds gets kicked back tot he polititians when election time rolls around or at any other time when they just happen to need some back pocket money....Go ahead N.J. keep electing these creeps because as you know or at least SHOULD know is that if you always do what you always did you'll always get what you always got!!!!! Now suffer with it but for the love of God please don't complain because you sound like a whimp ...

I guess that's why Seaside Hts Police get paid so little for what they do, during the summer and the winter when the scum bag druggies and dealers move back in for the off-season.

WOW ! that's quite a chunk of change. But I suppose it's beside the point in the election. The question is , can he still perform the duties of sherrif in his mid eighties? Or is it time to give the young guns a chance? The young guns in this case are in they're sixties already so maybe one of them deserves a shot while there's still time.
Part of this discussion might also include the issue of a mandantory retirement age for the sheriff.

The choice in a nut-shell: "In contrast, Armstrong receives a small state pension of $7,836... as an investigator for the State Commission of Investigations and the Division of Criminal Justice." Polhemus, the long-time double-dipper, is too busy counting his money to be a figurehead sheriff any more. There's too much crime in Ocean County to allow this sham to go on.

The New Jersey Watchdog report is an interesting read. It shows just how contradictory our Illustrious Governor is and just how good he is at talking out of both sides of his mouth. When his Deputy Chief of Staff collects as a retiree and is getting a paycheck for his state job, that's fraud. When the Lt.Governor "fudged" a report so her friend could collect a larger pension, that's fraud.
The Governor hasn't kept one campaign promise. State debt at record high level, property taxes at record high levels, unemployment at record high levels. "Do as I say, not as I do", right Governor? Run for President all you want Chris, You can't hide from your failed record, no matter how much you say it's a "comebeck".

I'm sorry but this article is missing some relevant information and could seem biased. It trumpets Mr. Polhemus' salary to the penny but fails to mention any other income the challengers have. It does not mention how many years he spent in the Seaside PD nor McMenamin's in Stafford. Nor is Mr. Armstrong's pension figure is available. And hey, $7836 a year isn't too shabby for five years work either. I just don't like the way this article is lead in and the lack of some data. I don't know enough about the candidates but I feel a little slant here. Is it intentional? Probably not but........

Bud Armstrong has no law enforcement background and the other one left Stafford Twp on questionable circumstances. Research him through Google and you will see why and how he left the police dept.
Abolish the sheriff dept, they do nothing for you as does most of county goverment. Goverment is way too big, we only need our towns, a small county and an even smaller state one.

They run the courthouse...they serve in the county domestic violence unit...they have a county wide k-9 unit available to all department without a k-9 unit...they have a warrant squad to lock up fugitives and members of society that do not pay child support...they run the police academy that trains all of ocean county's law enforcement, and also they have a criminal investigations unit that handles and processed all serious crimes, accidents, and deaths. i believer other than toms river, no other police department has a criminal investigations unit. Seriously? You all can't blame Polhemus for what he gets paid. You should all blame yourselves because you voted him in, YOU gave him his salary.
The law should state that when you take another Gov't job your pension should stop until you no longer have that Job/position and then your pension picks back up. You will then see how fast they don't want the 'other' job!
Polhemus should not be allowed to run for another term at the age of 84. I don't care how spry he maybe....He is 84 years old which means he is still driving as well....Thats scary enough, let alone him being a Sheriff carrying a gun.
What you talkin about Willis?
8:42 am on Tuesday, October 23, 2012
We can blame him too because he should disclose this when he asks for our votes. Its called being honest Why is he running again knowing he is stealing from us? At 84, how good of a job could he be doing anyways? And he drives a car.....get the heck off the road? Are taxpayers paying for his high car insurance premiums too.
Quit now and show some honor!!

9:26 am on Tuesday, October 23, 2012
He's not being deceptive. Think about it, its not like some one asked him his salary and he said he wasn't disclosing it or he kept it hidden. That would be deceptive.
No where does it say if he runs for Sheriff that he has to disclose his persion amt or his salary. If they are going to continue to pay him why wouldn't he take it? You know damn well if it was offered to you or I, we would take it as well.
You are right tho, at 84 how good a job can he be doing?
And as far as his car Ins premiums... how do you know they are high? AND if they are... LOL... we are paying him well enought that he can afford them!

OK bottom line says we are paying out a total of 9.1million to 51 retired state people. Now that comes to approx $271.000. per year. How many people that live in Ocean county can say they retired and make over $75,000/yr. Either this number is wrong or the people of NJ must find a way to stop it.

The man works and should be paid. His pension is based on being a police officer who worked his way through the ranks. He was a civil servant.
He worked many years of nights weekends and holidays in a thankless job with pretty much the scum of the earth. His family never knew if he would be walkong through that door later or if he would be meeting his maker at the hands of some moron. What it seems like to me from some commentsis a lot of green eyed monsters, who woild never have the guts to be a police officer
What you talkin about Willis?
10:19 am on Tuesday, October 23, 2012
Does he qualify for another pension as Sheriff? Since he is already 84 and well past the life expectancy tables, if he does, who gets this pot of gold? That is the triple dip.
At 84 he has probably been collecting a pension for 30 years. 30 years x say 43k on average. $1.3 million in retirement income thanks to the taxpayers
does he get free healthcare too?
nice gig

Wake Up Doreen, Did you know that thousands of people apply to become police officers for each town? As an employer that tells me I'm offering too much in terms of salary, benefits, & retirement. A good business person knows when he has the upper hand and can reduce the offer, NOT keep giving the house away!

What a decision this year for Sheriff. And remember, as for as the current sheriff, your current freeholders stand behind this double dipper all the way. Armstrong is probably the realistic choice here. I'm not sure I'm hiring the guy that is on disability. If he is able to run and serve as a Sheriff, you have to ask yourself if his disability payments need to be revisited. A lot of complaints about the Sheriff, but I read one solution (thanks to letsgetreal and Redonred): Stop voting for him. Vote for the other guy (Bob Armstrong). For those who would put him dowm because he was not in law enforcement, allow me to point out one thing: Many in law enforcement have a military background, and judging from his photo, it looks like Mr. Armstrong does too. I'm willing to give him a chance, how about you? Just my opinion. Vote for the person, not the party.
