Oh come on....this is what a President does. If the president were a Republican you'd be nominating him for sainthood. The difference is that this one is more likely to be effective and surround himself with competent people instead of "Heckuva Job Brownie" (who has criticized the President for being too efficient. What the heck is wrong with you people? Can you not give it a rest for a couple of days? I am a registered Democrat and proud liberal but I think Chris Christie, a man I would never vote for, is doing a commendable job. This kind of putting partisanship aside is something YOUR side seems incapable of doing.

No. The only president that did not visit disaster sites is G. Bush. It is part of their job. It is how they can find out where to send the most aid. If he did not come you would complain about that too. Your hatred of a black man in the White House is not only eating you alive, it is a detriment to this country.

Will his visit close down the NJ Turnpike, or the Garden State Parkway ? Air Force 1 at Newark, just as the first flights will be going out ?

Pure grandstanding. No concern for the people who are pushed aside as he prances around.

No but the crews from as far away as California and Canada will. It takes time to clear the trees, replace the poles, string new wire and replace blown transformers. That is what the crews that were in place during the storm are doing now. The last time a hurricane went through my area, it took 9 days to get the job done. You are complaining and it is only a couple days.

It is customary for the Pres to visit any area marked as a disaster area. He visited Alabama when the tornado hit there. If you down like Obama that's right but it is the norm and The Gov wants him to come. It's sad there are so many small minded people. We need as much local and federal help as possible.

Exactly Veronica! This is presidential leadership, not campaigning or a political act. Any president should be visiting a disaster site like this ASAP. As for those who say his visit will cause a close down of some highways or back up Newark International, Hmm, maybe he could just do a fly over in Air Force Once and not do a ground visit until 5 days after the fact! ;-)

Not to mention we have military out here as well. So everyone who's complaining that he's coming needs to look at it differently. No one wanted this and I'm sure Obama wasn't like oh cool hurricane! First of all, President Obama is not coming here to New Jersey to campaign. We live in a deep blue state - everyone knows how it will vote in the upcoming election. Rather, the president is doing his job as a leader and bringing both the attention of the country and the financial support of the Federal government to the devastation in New Jersey.

In other words, Helpa Mee, yes, his visit can help turn your power back on.

The President has received considerable criticism for "failing to lead". I would expect that he receive accolades for leading.

Yes, shut it down. Give this whole thing about two weeks when the truth comes out (as it always does) and you will see that FEMA is a SAM and a waste. We have had departments in place for decades to handle these issues.

The federal government should render financial aid and then get the hell out of the way. Let the states and American volunteers do what we do best and everything will be handled much more efficiently and effectively.

How difficult is it for you people to understand that the Federal Government Screws Up Everything? Look at Libya. Obama written all over it.

Obama left 4 Americans in Libya behind.....he had to go to a fundraiser with his 1% Democrat pals.

Today, during a non-campaign campaign stop at the Red Cross, President Obama told the nation something his administration obviously didn’t believe during the seven-hour attack on our consulate in Benghazi (and a nearby annex) on the night of September 11, 2012: That when an "American is in need… we leave nobody behind":

This is a tough time for a lot of people; millions of folks all across the Eastern Seaboard, but America's tougher. And we're tougher because we pull together, we leave nobody behind, we make sure we respond as a nation and remind ourselves that whenever an American is in need, all of stand together to make sure we're providing the help that's necessary.

Obamie said NO to help for the Americans in Libya.....it wasn't OPTIMAL.

Then again this coming from the man who gave us "you didn't build that" and "Joe, I want to spread the wealth around"

Trust Obama - Absolutely NOT!

In an interview with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register, Obama was asked if he regretted his push to enact health-care overhaul legislation when he had huge Democratic majorities in Congress instead of emphasizing measures to fix the economy. “Absolutely not,” responded the president.

That must have come as a slap in the face to the 23 million Americans out of work, trapped in part-time jobs or given up looking for work; to the 50 percent of college grads who can’t find jobs or labor at doing something below their hard-earned college credentials, and to the 5.5 million unemployed women and the 27.5 million women in poverty, increases of, respectively, 500,000 and 3.6 million over the levels when Obama took office.

Obama’s excuse for “absolutely not” was GOP opposition in Congress. Early in his term, Republicans had just 40 votes in the U.S. Senate, not enough to stop legislation with a filibuster unless they had help from Democratic members. More important, the GOP opposition Obama cited wasn’t formidable enough to block his drive to pass Obamacare. In other words, he was willing to take on Republican “obstructionism” in the name of a long-cherished liberal goal of overhauling the health-care industry but not to combat the unemployment crisis.

From someone that grew up in Parsippany , and went to Montclair , let me 1st say that I feel for everyone without power. and the expected wait until next week before most of the power is back on , still thats a lot better then the 200,000 homes destroyed in Cuba , or those that lost everything here in the US due to the storm surge.
++
For those that have had damages at least you get some relief via FEMA , but you are looking at a process that will take several years to play out , similar to the mess created by Irene & Katrina.
++
But when it comes to the long term there needs to be a reality check,
You know that Obama as imperfect as he is will make sure that relief via FEMA reaches the NY Metro Area so it can rebuild over the next few years, but what do you think Bishop Romney is going to do ?
++
Just because Romney stepped down from his duties as a Bishop in the Mormon church does not mean his beliefs changed.
Bishop Romney has made it clear that he does no believe in FEMA, or any of the FED programs that provide a safety net , he instead believes in charity from individuals , which is why he stopped and made a moment to do a photo op in Ohio so that he could box up some donated goods so they could be sent somewhere in the area of New Jersey.
On the assumption you are able to vote next week just take into consideration that in this moment you not someone else will need FED help.

24% of FEMA's annual budget in recent years has gone to two states: Texas and Oklahoma -- two red states that want "less government." So beachgirl, you are right about that. But give Chris Christie credit on this one -- he is sticking his neck out to do the right thing for his state and putting partisan politics aside. Hard to believe that this is the same guy who was calling Obama incompetent a week ago. And yet he has been a big enough person to change his tune IN THE FACE OF NEW INFORMATION. The political question for Christie is whether this will make him blaze a new trail of Republican moderation for the future, or if his own party will cut him off at the knees.

Notice how anti-federal government Republican clowns happily extend their hands for federal aid when they need it. Christie's hypocrisy is especially transparent after this hurricane. Hey Chris, why don't you do the usual Republican thing and tell all the flood victims to get their hands dirty, quit whining, and pull themselves up by their bootstraps, without having to rely on government assistance? What's that? (deafening silence among the hypocrites...)

I'm glad Barack Obama is in office during this time of disaster. As opposed to his opponent he knows it is his job to think about those who need assistance. President Obama knows we're all in this together. No matter what percentage you are, no matter what party you're in, we stand stronger together.

It's so telling when you see Romney rallies displaying signs that say "change". He doesn't even attempt to offer us any hope.

LOL Joe! Although I do think Christie is doing the right thing with this. After all available federal aide is just like a federal income tax deduction, tax credit, etc. 99.9% of the people that disagree with some deductions or credits and feel they shouldn't be part of the tax code are still going to take them because they're there and they can!

What a difference to have a President who is proactive, on top of the situation, and effectively coordinates and manages the situation before it becomes a crisis. One can only imagine what would have happened under the previous administration. Oh, I forgot. We don't have to imagine. It actually happened... it was called Katrina!

The democrats in LA stole $500 million dollars that was to be used to shore up the city for years before the storm and did not evacuate people on the hundreds of buses they had and you are blaming Bush? Typical liberal, take, take ,take, take, take, take, nothing left, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame. I hope Obama gets booted next week, just to shut up all you whiners.

Coming to pick up a check from Jay Z and Kanye. "Obama doesn't care about white people". Hear how nice that sounds, just like after Katrina.

It's good to see that the Patch commentary lives up to expectations -- idiotic, thoughtless, and uninformed. New Jersey is a disaster area and POTUS is doing what he was elected to do -- lead the federal government in providing assistance to its citizens in need. Enough said. Any other President -- democrat or republican -- would have done the exact same thing. If you want to talk politics, let's talk about how Romney, a week ago, wanted to disband FEMA, and earlier today changed his mind, again.

Well, folks...the storm has passed. Now the real work begins. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all, as you deal as you must with the aftermath.

I have no intention of politicizing the storm. I pray only for the safety of you and your loved ones...

Let the first responders do their jobs, and the utility workers, theirs. If asked, assist - otherwise, it is best if we wait patiently. Where possible, look in on your neighbors. Make sure they are okay.

Watch each others' backs, folks. We can weather this in exemplary fashion, or succumb to our own baser nature.

For the next week, pay close attention to the good you see done by your fellow man. The media will only be reporting the defeats, never the victories.

Patience is a virtue, and a difficult one to abide with. We will all need much patience over the next few days, as lines form for fuel, and as we wait our turn for restoration of our utilities. We're fortunate that the temperature is relatively mild - things could have been much worse.

Be sure and thank those in your community who help out when you see them over the next coming weeks. They've earned your thanks, but they only rarely receive them.
That's another change that is long overdue.

Personally, our family escaped with no injuries, and property damage can be repaired. Today, each of us knows what is really important.

Let's show the world what Jersey can do.
