Sandy-Flooded Residents Should Apply for This Grant

Point Boro: Hazard mitigation grants may be available

Point Borough is urging its Sandy-flooded residents to apply for FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grants.

Attached is an application form that eligible Borough homeowners are being urged to complete and submit by February 5 for FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

Also attached is an instruction form for the residents (it's best for residents to read the instructions before completing the application).

The application must be returned to the Borough, then the Borough submits a complete application on behalf of the interested residents, said Borough Administrator David Maffei.

"This is a competitive grant and there is no guarantee that anyone will receive funding," Maffei said.

If anyone has any questions they should call the Borough Engineer, Ernie Peters at (732) 286-9220 or e-mail him at Ernie.Peters@rve.com.

Stafford Township Adminastrator Said that if you apply and dont get it you are then obligated to do the work anyway out of your own pocket..So when applying to raise a house this may not be good if you cant afford to raise...is that true in Point also?

This is a "reimbursement" so those applying still must be raising either way but thats to receive the grant - if you apply and don't raise your home it doesn't appear that there is any action to force an applicant to raise... Qualifying homes would be ranked, the application may have that information

To "Tired of Jim:" I am working today on getting an answer to your question as well as getting details on many other issues regarding this grant program, FEMA maps and what it all means to flooded residents. Meanwhile, I would strongly urge that everyone please read the instruction sheet extremely carefully and call the engineer with any questions BEFORE filing the application with the Borough. Thank you.

Dear Governor, There is a critical issue that needs to be addressed regarding FEMA rezoning. This issue is not arguing the height requirement. It is addressing incorrect zoning. Many communities have been zoned as "V" zone that will in no way ever see 3 foot waves. This invalid zoning is requiring many folks to utilize pilings rather then be able to use normal cement or cinderblock foundations with appropriate flood vents. This difference is astronomical as to the effect it may have on many regarding rebuilding vs walking away from their property.Would you please investigate the potential of an immediate state appeal to the zoning assignments since it is quite obvious if you look at the map, that it was not done in any accurate scientific manner. Thank You Bernie Neuhaus W Granada Brick NJ

bernie, I do not foresee the governor filing an appeal since he made a public announcement last week http://patch.com/A-1w5Q that NJ is adopting the FEMA maps.

For those asking about Point Beach and other towns: Sorry for delay in response, but I had been waiting since this morning for a reply from Point Beach and just got one: the Point Beach Council would have to vote on whether to participate in the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. The Point Borough Council voted to do so at its last meeting. I will be at the next Point Beach meeting and will report if they take that vote.
Regarding other towns besides Point Beach and Point Borough: you would have to contact your local officials and ask if the governing body there has taken a vote to participate in this grant program and then ask for details.

Karri, call the municipal officials in your town and ask if they are participating in this. But please be careful to get all info. up front in case this obligates you to do certain things whether you are ultimately approved or not.

Devil in the details!!!!! You must raise or build to new outrageous FEMA "V" zone and you may or may not get any help in maybe 6 months. The zones may also may change in 18-24 months. The government has made a disaster worse not better. I have never seen a "V" house height in PT Boro in 29 years and it is at all price levels. The values will go down 50% if this is not fixed. We will never be able to sell a home at this rate. stopor of PP

While NJ and NY have succumb to the arbitrary time frame, DC, the bedrock of the country's government, is taking a measured and thoughtful approach to the impending dangers. It's especially interesting as parts of DC are prone to repeated, heavy flooding .

stopor, My point is all/most representatives who are voting on Biggert Waters/FEMA Funding etc have residences in DC, as do the FEMA officials. Despite repeated flooding in DC for years, there has been no requirement to immediately require adherence to new building standards. However, in response to what has been referred to as a once in a 100 year storm, our lives are being turned up side down. If the center of the federal government can exist without addressing this risk, what is the urgency in implementing these changes here?
