Toms River Teacher Charged with Sexual Contact with Student
Bail set at $300,000 for 31-year-old Barnegat woman.
A 31-year-old Barnegat woman - who is a teacher in the Toms River Regional school system - has been charged with criminal sexual contact against a student, according to a press release.
Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said in the press release that Erin T. Haskell, who teaches at Intermediate South in Beachwood, has been charged with having an inappropriate relationship with one of her students, a minor. Due to the student's age, the Prosecutor's Office did not disclose any other information about the student.
Haskell has been charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and exhibiting obscene material to a minor.
Toms River Regional School authorities have been informed of the charges, according to the Prosecutor's Office.
Toms River Regional Schools Superintendent Frank Roselli said the district took action at the November executive meeting of the school board on the matter of Haskell's employment in the district. She is not teaching in the district while the investigation is underway, he said.
“We are aware of the allegations made regarding one of our teachers who taught at Intermediate South. The Board is aware of the allegations and took action at our last Board meeting on Nov. 20 assuring that said teacher would not be allowed to resume her teaching position pending the completion of the investigation by the Prosecutors Office," Roselli said in a prepared statement. "At this point in time we do not want to make any comments that might compromise the ongoing investigation."
According to the Prosecutor's Office, Haskell is expected to surrender herself to authorities.
Haskell's attorney, Bradley Billhimer told Patch: "we are aware of the charges against Ms. Haskell, and we're making arrangements for her surrender in the near future."
Bail has been set at $300,000 with no ten percent option by Superior Court Judge Rochelle Gizinski. The provisions of “Nicole’s Law” apply, and Haskell is restrained from having any contact with the victim.
The investigation is being conducted by Detective Melissa Matthews of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and Detective Sergeant Glen DeMarco of the Beachwood Police Department. Anyone with any information regarding this investigation is asked to call Det. Matthews at 732-929-2027, or Det. Sgt. DeMarco at 732-286-6000 Ext. 100.
The arrest followed an investigation by law enforcement officers from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the Beachwood and Barnegat Police Departments and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department.

For one thing teachers are not children's "friends". Parents need to tell their children that teachers are their teachers and not their friends. That is the confusion in the first place. This stuff where kids are told to trust their teachers because the teacher is their friend, opens up opportunity for weirdo's to entrap a child into an inappropriate situation. The old authority figure was thrown out the window long ago with the "Friend" relationships. A cop is a cop, a teacher is the teacher. Use Mr and Mrs. and don't call teachers Miss Mary or Mr. Joe. Separation begins with home education. Trust no one and especially the teachers.

Toms River School District does NOT have any policy for such.
I hae brought up several times over the past 2 years that TRRS needs a "Contact Policy"... which includes facebook, texting, emailing, twitter, etc... It first started out as "freinding" on facebook but needs to be broader than that as teachers text students.
But... Hauenstein, McKenna, and Roselli to lazy to do anything....
I hope the parent sues TRRS and the Superintendents individually as they are liable for having NO POLICY regulating such.
I knew it was just a matter of time for something like this to hit TRRS.
There are teachers that freind students on facebook.
There are teachers, sports, that have all the student phone numbers and will send out text blasts to the players.
Donna Griffin

So it's the lack of a POLICY that enabled something like this to happen?!?! Please know that I am not going to jump on the bandwagon to burn this gal at the stake until all the facts are in. However, in cases of involving proven abuse, I find it hard to fathom that someone with a mind that could sexually prey on a child would be deterred by a "policy" in some employee handbook.

Donna,
I'd have to disagree... TRRS "enables" such behavior...
no different than Sandusky and PSU...
The Admin... from Super on down... know teachers freind students on facebook and do nothing about it...
The Admin knows... teachers text students... and do nothing about it..
why... no policy...
etc etc... that is "enabling"... policys allow admin to dismiss the teacher or employee who violate policy regardless of tenure.
and to quote McKenna who is assistant super of Intermediate... she was more concerned about the teachers 1st amendment rights and concerned if the teachers union would go along with it... yep, my conversation with her discussing this 2 years ago.
You just can't make this stuff up.
You can get help for that

Bluebeam..what does that have to do with this? Try to stay focused here, I know it's hard for you. She will lose her job...tenure will not protect her, and she was a teacher of the year so she needn't worry about getting fired even without tenure. She has no advanced degree and that has no standing in this case, and she would be getting merit pay based on her performance in the classroom...you make no sense, as usual.

These slimy, waste of space abusers should have thier own island somewhere, where they could abuse each other and leave our beautiful children to grow up in a happy and safe environment!

IF she is guilty, she needs to be punished as equally as if she were a man. The reason that you see a lot of this with female teachers is because the courts and their sexist judges give the "ladies" a pass while crucifying male teachers for the same offense (Mary Kay LeTourneau?). This is an equal opportunity crime and should be treated as such. Hence, the term "justice".

What's ridiculous is that this teacher was not giving the option to pay 10 percent of her $300,000 bond..I think it's nuts that a babysitter shakes a baby to its death and gets a cheaper bond..I guess the court thinks that a teacher having sex with a student is more of a heinous crime then shaking a baby to its death

This is not just mere negligence...
it is gross negligence to NOT have a policy in place of TRRS employees contact with kids... whether it be facebook, text blasts, twitter, etc.

4:54 pm on Wednesday, November 28, 2012
Back in my day in grammar school (several decades ago - yes folks, the Stone Age, haha), some 12 and 13 year old students had matured so early they looked like freshmen in college. 8th graders were carrying around condoms and shaving their beards. We actually had one or two students who were 16 years of age in 8th grade who were there because they had been left back many times in grade school -- either because they belonged in special ed and fell through the cracks or their parents were too lazy to make sure they went to school and lost many days to truancy.
In this current case, which was it -- a Mary Kay LeTourneau-type who got involved with a post-pubescent teenage boy, or something even sicker than that?

There was a teacher who taught in the system back in the 1970's who was foundhave fondled girls who were in elementary school. He was then moved on to High School South where again he was found to be doing the samething, Well, he was told be the "power to be" at the time to turn in his teaching certificate and move out of state and NEVER try to obtain a NJ teaching cert again and this would be swept "under the carpet" like it never happend. Well, this person did move out of state and he went on to teach in the State of Pennsylvania!

I keep on read news about educators with really bad behaviors. What is wrong with these educators? To many abuse their power in different ways including crossing the line of being perverts. The professionalism is little to be desire. In fact I have seen the exact opposite. I find to many act unprofessional in the school system. The main reason why they need to get rid of tenured. It needs to go. Christie did nothing. Making it 4 years and his plan is a joke. Not only does this have to stop so does everything else that goes on that shouldn't. All Teacher positions should go through what the police go through when hired. Drug Testing and a Psychology Testing every few years. There is a lot of waste and the Administrators are no better, they know what is going on and if they claim they don't then they should lose their jobs too. They should go through the same rigorous check and everything should be applied to them as well. I do apologize for those teachers and administrators are doing what is right.
