Two Republican Newcomers Challenge Point Pleasant Borough Council Democratic Incumbents

Faugno and Wisniewski challenge Leitner and McHugh

Republicans Patricia Lynn Faugno and John R. Wisniewski will challenge two Democratic Point Pleasant Borough Council candidates in November.

Faugno, Crestview Terrace, and Wisniewski, Rosewood Avenue, are challenging Chris Leitner, Donna Drive, and John McHugh Jr., River Avenue, for two, three-year council seats, said Borough Administrator David Maffei.

The Republicans will seek to take back their majority on council.

On Jan. 2, Democrats gained a majority on council for the first time since 1981.

Leitner, McHugh, Councilman Chris Goss and Mayor William Schroeder form the narrow Democratic majority. Republican council members are Toni DePaola, Robert Sabosik and Mitch Remig.

In the borough council form of government, the mayor only votes when there is a tie.

Monday was the deadline for candidates running as Republicans or Democrats to file to run with their municipal clerks.

The two Democrats filed Monday and the Republicans filed last Thursday.

Candidates running as independents have until primary day, June 7, to file with the Ocean County Board of Elections.
