What Would You Improve in the Boro or Beach in 2013?
If you could make a New Year's resolution for the Boro or Beach, what would it be?
More than 45 percent of Americans make a resolution every year, according to statisticbrain.com.
Some people vow to live a healthier lifestyle, others promise to spend more time with family, and many say they will try to save money.
As millions of Americans make resolutions to improve their lives, what could we do right here in Point Borough or Point Beach to make it an even better place to live?
Point Borough is working on a plan to improve Bridge Avenue. Any suggestions?
Point Borough is also considering setting up a town-wide reverse 911 system, but there may be disagreement about whether it's needed or whether spending for it should be capped at a specific amount. The town can also opt to pay to use automated robo calls each time a need arises. What do you think?
Sounds like most members of the Point Beach governing body want to keep the overnight summer parking plan, but may be doing some tweaking. Do you have any suggestions? Are there sections of District 4 that should be removed from the plan? Should any section of District 3 be added?
Do you think the parking plan worked this past summer to help keep bar patrons off residential streets in the wee hours? Now is the time to voice your questions, concerns and suggestions to the mayor and council who will discuss this at upcoming meetings.
What is on your Point Borough or Point Beach wish list? What is one thing you would improve in 2013?
Tell us in the comment section below or blog about your ideas for how the towns can improve.

Provide for handicap parking near the PP boards. Currently, there is no such thing.
From 10/1 to 4/1, I would allow free parking on the boardwalk side streets. This would encourage greater attendance in winter months. Most of the time these spaces are empty because there is free parking on the other side of the ocean street.

In both communities, for the local authorities to take steps to actively encourage the construction of some affordable workforce housing. It's the right thing to do, even if it does mean the towns would have a slight reduction in their overall tax ratables. At least some of the lower-income people who work here ought to be able to live here. And, a greater percentage of the kids who grow up here ought to be able to afford to move back someday.

How about they all work hard like those who did and able to move in these two towns? Why do some people think that others deserve or should get everything given or handed to them? What are you teaching them? How are they ever going to learn anything? You will be surprised the results and accomplishments of working hard.

Sidewalks! I wish the Boro had sidewalks!

Yes, I agree about the sidewalks! Herbertsville Road leads to ALL 4 schools in the Boro but it is treacherous to walk or bike to school along this road. Also, is it possible to just expand the Honeywell Instant Alert system calling list (or add another list to it for town emergencies). Honeywell was used plenty during Sandy for announcements other than school info. It just seems to me that it is already there, and being used, just expand its calling list.

What I would like to see in both towns. Is Mayors and Council Members acting like Adults. Stop playing politics and games being they are dragging down some of the innocent residents with them. Stop being disingenuous in the decisions that are being made. They need to start putting the residents first above all. They need to get a hold on taxes and do what they have to accomplish this goal. They need to get a backbone and stand up to the police contracts, town contracts, do what they have to even if it means layoffs.

The Unions took town the industry in America and will slowly destroy our communities.
$2500 of every USA built car goes to benefits.
Your town budgets are headed into the same direction.

Frank Pagano: I do agree, so what is the solution to these serious problems? How do we turn it all around? Layoffs, tell the real truth of what or how many employees are truly needed. Maybe everyone has to work a little harder than what they are use to. Everyone has no problem spending other peoples money. They would never pay or do what they allow when it comes to their own money. Dismantle all the Unions and start over new. Start running the towns, schools like real businesses have to.

Clean up Bridge Ave!. A few years go, there was an awesome proposal on the table to make it look a little more like a town center. Better parking, sidewalks, center island to help with crossing, beautiful landscape, etc. most of the monies would come from federal monies to use or lose. Lets put the efforts into upgrading the appearance of our great town, reflecting the pride we have in our community. Take the lead from our neighboring towns who have put in that effort, keeping their property values high, unlike our other neighbors who have earned the nicknames of Bricktucky and Howellabama! Wake up Boro!

All great ideas for the Boro that are in various stages of development. Mayor Schroeder this year got the state to commit to the work and expense of the engineering of a new Bridge Ave design, Counciman Leitner has been working on Safe Routes To Schools and Safe Streets programs since day one, and I hope to see Improvement Zoning for our commercial areas after adoption of the new Master Plan. These are vital but time consuming efforts that have committees dedicated to them that are always looking for more folks to help achieve their goals, so please come and get involved. Emergency communications systems are under revue and will be implemented in 2013. Council meets twice a month, we need your voices, your ideas, and your participation. A happy and wonderful New Year to the Boro in 2013!

The plans for Bridge Ave have been " in the works" for over 3 yrs! Wasn't Jim Giordano's ( former planning board member?) plan posted in the Ocean Star that long ago?? It was beautiful....but nothing happened. The consensus from many locals is that our mayor has more interest in Point Beach than the Boro. Could someone turn him around from Arnold Ave. and point him in the right direction towards his constituents? We need someone to take a stand and make decisions now that will benefit our town!

Lets start 2013 off with the truth. Bridge Avenue is a County Road and it is Ocean County that has committed to fund the engineering schematic necessary to move forward with the Bridge Avenue streetscape. It is a wonderful idea that has been in the making for many years. The problem is ... how do you fund such a large project when taxpayers are already over-burdened? Most state grant monies have dried up and as of now, there has been no committment of state monies to the Bridge Avenue streetscape. The Borough is currently in no financial position to fund this project, especially due to the additional costs incurred by Sandy. The streetscape will require many state and local entitles, both public and private, to come together to make this a success. It is more than just adding sidewalks. To make this project a success requires additional parking, a reconfiguration of roadways, and an expansion of right-of-ways, etc. This is a project all of council would like to see succeed. Bridge Avenue is a great gateway to our wonderful commercial district and our town. An improvement to Bridge Avenue would be a win-win for all of us. We will continue to seek funding and any available resources to see this project succeed.
May the New Year bring you much prosperity, peace, love and happiness!

"Let's start off 2013 with the truth" by toni depaola. True politico-speak. Are you suggesting that you ended 2012 without the truth?
Why has Ocean County thrown this on the back burner for so long? You do get your political marching orders from there (as well as your paycheck and benefits) so I would think you would know. Maybe you would like to share it with us?

Thank you for clearing up where the monies would come from for such a project , Toni. The streetscape idea started long before Sandy. Although I believe our citizens who have suffered extreme damage should be our first priority, I just wish some commitment could be made to fix up ANY part of Bridge Ave. Something is better than nothing. Just my New Years wish...

It is completely idiotic for citizens to show up at a council meeting and watch the council go in to executive session.
Show up once a month at 6.00 pm and do your private business prior to meeting(it can be posted and you can have an hour of your own time if needed )and be there at 7.00 to Talk to public and actually listen and deal with other matters.
Post the agenda no later than 9.00 am the day before .
That allows all citizens the ability to review agenda.
Then you can walk a little of the walk of open government instead of talking the talk!
And dont reply that the State makes us do it.
The State does not set your Agenda ,,,you do ....and start showing us that the citizens are first priority.
And by the way ,,,show up!!

I would like cheaper beach badges to home owners in Beach and Boro. We have a beautiful beach and many don't take advantage due to the high cost to go for a few enjoyable minutes when we have free time.

Would a little parking enforcement outside of District 4 in The Beach be too much to ask for? Yeah, it probably is.

How about closing all the bars at midnight, instituting a tax for these establishments to remain open and give it over to high paid attorneys to sort out?

We would love to see a dog park in our community. We, along with many other responsible local pet owners, drive good distances to use parks in other towns so our dogs can have some "playtime". Also, I would be glad to purchase a badge or pass so my lab could enjoy our beaches unleashed - even if it was only during certain hours or off-season.

Isn't there a dog park at Beaver Dam Park? Right by Route 88 where Pt Boro/Brick meet? Less than 5 miles from farthest point of Point Pleasant Beach at most.
As for beach access...unfortunately for you, there were too many "less" responsible pet owners that did not clean up after their pets.

I must disagree and say all the dog owners I know clean up after their pets. I, on occasion, have cleaned up after other people's pets in a park or on the beach. I also pick up all types of litter dropped by lazy people that can't locate trash bins a lot more often. It is sad that all the good, responsible owners and pets have to suffer for the few that don't care. Also, as far as I know, dogs are not allowed off their leashes anywhere in Beaver Dam Park.

You can't disagree. If people had cleaned up from their pets, the pets would not have been "banned". I am not saying you, nor the people you know, are the ones that did not clean up....but there are/were other less caring ones. And yes, it is a shame that responsible owners have to suffer.
As for Beaver Dam Park, I see many dogs unleashed in that back corner, the far south west fenced in section.

Also Mary Ann, I believe Pt Beach has an option that for a small one time fee...you can have your dogs run free on the school property, when school is out for the day. Something to do with geese.
