Point Pleasant Earth Day - 04/26/14

The Point Pleasant Borough Environmental Commission is excited to announce that the 2014 Earth Day Celebration will be held at Riverfront Park, River Road in Point Pleasant Borough; the event will be held on April 26th from noon to 4 p.m. with a rain date of April 27th.

This year is the 10th Earth Day Celebration hosted by the Borough's Environmental Commission and they are once again preparing for a great event.  This event will be preceded by the semi-annual Beach Sweeps hosted by Clean Ocean Action at the river beaches of River Ave. and Maxson Ave from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.** as well as the Ocean First Shred Day from 9 a.m. to 11a.m.***, both on Saturday.

The Earth Day event showcases vendors of green products/ideas, environmental organizations, and local and small businesses while also trying to instill environmentally responsible ideas and practices into our younger generations. There will be activities, games and rides for the kids.  In addition, there will be food prepared by Jersey Shore BBQ, Shore Fresh Seafood, Cool Concessions LLC and Shore Point Foods as well as music performed by the Sherman Brothers, the Soup Sandwich Band and DJ Trish.
The subject of this year’s Celebration and Photo Contest is, “Point Pleasant is Wild About Nature”, concentrating on the wildlife, wildlife conservation and the scenic areas of the Borough and the promotion and conservation of it all.  The photo contest was open to students from Point Pleasant Borough and the Commission will be awarding prizes to the top 6 photos submitted.  Also, a $500.00 Environmental Commission Scholarship will be awarded to a senior of Point Pleasant Borough High School this year (please reach out to the Borough High School guidance office for details).
The Commission always welcomes donations, and is still accepting applications for all exhibitors and vendors.  For more info, please contact Chris Constantino (732-232-0243) or pointboroec@gmail.com (please title the subject - 2014 Earth Day Inquiry).  All proceeds fund the annual scholarship awarded to Borough High School seniors, the prizes for the winners of the photo contest, and the operations and incidentals of the event itself.  Any monetary donations are always greatly appreciated at any time.

**The kick off for the Borough's Beach Sweep will be held on Saturday, 4/26 at 9 a.m. at the River Ave. river beach on the Manasquan River and will proceed to the Maxson Ave. river beach.    Clean Ocean Action's Beach Sweeps is one of the longest running cleanups in the world.  Data collection is one of the important tasks of the volunteers and will be analyzed to identify pollution trends in the water off New Jersey's coast.  The final results from Beach Sweeps are incorporated into an Annual Report used to educate citizens and lawmakers about nonpoint source pollution.

Please wear gloves, hard soled shoes and dress for the weather.  Beach Sweeps takes place rain or shine!  Great opportunity for community service!

***Also, take part in Ocean First Bank's Shred Day on Saturday, 4/26 from 9 a.m. to 11a.m. at the 2400 Bridge Ave. branch of Ocean First Bank, to protect your identity and your planet.    Go Green and help protect against identity theft by shredding and recycling your old financial records and paperwork in their giant shredder."
