Memorial Day Weekend Events Coming Up in Beach and Boro

Beach event Sat.; Boro is Sunday

Point Pleasant Beach will hold a bicycle parade and Memorial Day event from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday on Arnold Avenue from Lincoln to the band shell.

Point Pleasant Borough will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Community Park on Bridge Avenue and Beaver Dam Road.

The parade that has been held in recent years will not be held this year due to employee furlough days and financial constraints, according to borough officials.

The 1 p.m. ceremony will be moderated by former borough councilman William Dikun.

It will feature an invocation by Pastor Ray Tate of Life Chapel Church; the national anthem sung by Gracie Enright, Nellie Bennett fifth grader and member of the fifth grade chorus; and the borough high school marching band.

Also, Mayor William Schroeder and Borough Council members will make comments and lay wreaths, along with the borough Chamber of Commerce.

Also, the VFW Post 4715  will present its color guard, a 21-gun salute and the firing of a cannon.

Taps will be played and there will be a closing by Tate.

There will also be recognition of deceased grand marshals including: Donald Burke; Charles Mould; Frank Shellenbarger; Skeeter Odell and Bud Lomell.

And there will be recognition of attending past grand marshals: 2009 Grand Marshal Ray Piercy, Korea and Vietnam; 2009 Grand Marshal Jeff Wells, Vietnam; 2007 Grand Marshal Robert Meier, Vietnam; 2006 Grand Marshal Stanley Mohr, WWII  (who travels all the way from Kutztown, PA every year to join the boro event); 2004 Grand Marshal Shayne Santa Lucia, Iraq; 2004 Grand Marshal Don Tooker,  Vietnam; 2003 Grand Marshal Joseph Guidone,  WWII; and 2002 Grand Marshal Rich Belesky, Vietnam.
