Monday Night at the Point Beach Boardwalk at Summer's Unofficial Halfway Point

A chidren's performer, a puppet, a church raffle and lots of kids

Can you feel that tension in the air?

That's residents and visitors alike collectively thinking, "I cannot believe summer is half over!"

You could just feel that thought underlying the strollers being pushed on the boardwalk Monday night, the chords being strummed by Yosi, a children's musical entertainer, the kids jumping on rides, the parents feverishly snapping photos of their kids enjoying summer, while they still can.

It was Aug. 1, a tell-tale sign that we only have the last half of the fast summer still in front of us.

I say "half over" as a rough estimate for those of us who think of summer as  starting in mid to late June, after school ends, and lasting through Labor Day, which is on Sept. 5 this year.

When August hits, we feel like we've lost July (unless we took a week or two off during that steamy month) and we've only got August left.

For the calendar purists, the 95 days of summer that stretch from June 21 through Sept. 23, midday Aug. 7 is the official halfway point.

But Aug. 7 is only five days away. So no matter how you cut a summer in half, we're just about there.

So try to get some time off from work if you haven't already, fish or go to the beach, take an evening to stroll the boardwalk. You can walk on the Trex part barefoot without fear of splinters! (Those are the sections of the walkway that don't look or feel like wood. Trex is made from recycled wood and plastic.)

Shoot some pictures of your kids, parents or pals frolicking in the sun, catch some fireflies just to watch them fly away and make the most of summer while it's still here.
