Point Beach Moves Toward Continued Boardwalk Work

Work may start as soon as November.

Officials in Point Beach have received the first contribution from Jenkinson's Pavilion, Jenkinson's South and Ocean Dunes, paving the way for planned improvements along the boardwalk.

The three businesses will contribute $50,000 ever year over the next two decades to help defray the cost of the project by helping to pay down a recently-introduced bond ordinance, of just over a $1 million, for work on the area of the boardwalk closest to Jenkinson's Aquarium, according to Point officials.

Most of the boardwalk is now Trex, a synthetic lumber, except the area from Jenkinson's Aquarium, which represents the northern terminus of the project, to the southern terminus of the area by the police substation at the Arnold Avenue street end.

That area was deemed not eligible for Federal Emergency Management Funds, because it was determined that although most of the boardwalk was damaged by Sandy, that area was not, likely because that area was protected by the businesses on that section of boardwalk.

Mayor Vincent Barrella said as long as the bond ordinance is adopted, work could hopefully start in November or December, and possibly be completed by spring.
