La Du’s expertise includes painting, sculpture, drawing, collage, art history and art critique.

In addition, La Du is the creator of Yoga: Art in Motion, a program for children that combines yoga practice and art instruction.

As an art teacher who has studied and practiced yoga for more than 40 years, La Du decided to infuse the two disciplines for several reasons.

“Art builds children’s confidence by allowing them to express their feelings without being judged,” La Du explains.

“Guided meditation encourages the active listening that is essential for concentration, cognitive reasoning, and creative development. Children are able to concentrate in a peaceful environment while honing their fine and gross motor skills.

“But truly,” La Du continues, “yoga and art extend far beyond the physical and the visual. The two disciplines help people of all ages to keep open minds, accept cultural differences, and meet the mental and physical challenges in their lives with purpose.”

The challenges faced by women with cancer, and by volunteers trying to operate a cancer support organization, drew La Du to the Cancer Concern Center.

The Cancer Concern Center will be the beneficiary of the second-annual “Breast Fest” fundraiser being planned by Salon Du Monde for Oct. 11.

For 14 years, the Cancer Concern Center has provided support group meetings, meditation and yoga classes, massage and Reiki therapy, nutritional workshops, and new wigs to local adults with cancer regardless of their ability to pay.

The Cancer Concern Center has no paid staff and minimal overhead, funneling donations into client programs instead of administration.
