Sandy-damaged Coffeehouse Announces It Will Not Reopen

Rockn' Joe in Point Beach was flooded

What was once a bustling coffee shop lined with musical memorabilia, home to a popular Friday jam session, is the latest local business to announce it succumbed to Hurricane Sandy's massive flood waters and the long costly timeline to rebuild.

Rockn' Joe Coffeehouse and Bistro on Route 35 Point Pleasant Beach was flooded in Hurricane Sandy, and struggled to reopen after assessing damage and costs to restore. Yesterday, the shop announced it would not reopen.

The shop had also announced back in March that with no insurance on the building, the building owner was assessing the cost of repair, while Rockn' Joe was left to assess the process of replacing its restaurant equipment and furniture which was also uninsured.

Though the announcement Monday, made on the coffeehouse's facebook page, shared the news of the location's closing, the Terranova family who ran Rockn' Joe said this was a case of "when one door closes, another door opens," and shared optimism for another location in the future.

Caffeinated Coast, the new business name listed on the facebook page, is hoped to open in another location, possibly by summer 2014, according to the announcement.

Friends and customers shared comments of best wishes for the future venture, as the staff thanked the community for its support of the business and volunteers after Sandy.

The full announcement is below and the comment thread is here.

"Hi Friends and Family – Unfortunately, we will not be re-opening Rockn’ Joe. We wanted to take a moment and thank all of our friends and family for their continued support. It was an absolute blast running the business and seeing friendly faces every day! Specifically we wanted to thank the following people and organizations that went the extra mile for us after Super Storm Sandy – Thank you to Toni Pecunia, Shore 2 Recover, Ergo, Waves 4 Water, Scott Bostwick, Karen Bostwick, St. Paul’s Church of Bay Head, John Durante, Calvary Chapel and all of the volunteers that came and helped us clean the restaurant. We are eternally grateful to you – and will do our best to always pay it forward in your honor.

As the expression goes, when one door closes (or gets flooded:)…..another one opens. With that being said, you have not seen the last of the Terra-Novas and our love for coffee, food, music and this amazing place we call HOME. As you may have noticed, our name has changed…If the stars align….you just might see us pop up somewhere else next summer. So make sure to stay tuned to our fb page!

Until then, we wish you all a great rest of the summer!!! THANK YOU AGAIN FOR MAKING THIS ALL WORTHWHILE.

Love,
Dave, Shoana & David"
