Foodtown Signs Down, Stop & Shop Signs Up in Point Beach, As Opening Planned for Next Week

Stop & Shop may open newly-acquired store next week shortly before a May 27 grand opening

Stop & Shop may open at the former Foodtown site in Point Beach next Wednesday or Thursday, but May 27 is the official grand opening date.

The current process of installing new Stop & Shop signs, cleaning, updating technology and adding a lot of stock to the shelves at the grocery store being converted from Norkus Foodtown into Stop & Shop will be followed in the fall by more significant remodeling, Stop & Shop said on Wednesday.

Stop & Shop closed on the Point Pleasant Beach, Neptune City and Long Branch stores on Monday and closed on the Freehold Township and Manalpan stores on Wednesday, according to a prepared statement. All were sold by Norkus Enterprises Inc.

On Wednesday evening, crews were installing Stop & Shop signage and doing other work on the exterior, as a security guard turned away shoppers pulling into the parking lot entrance.

The security guard said the refurbishing may be done next week so that the store can open Wednesday or Thursday.

All stores will re-open officially as a "grand re-opening" under the Stop & Shop banner at 7 a.m. May 27, according to the company's statement.

“We are confident that our customers will be excited to see what we have done to offer them more choice and greater value,"said John Stobierski, Vice President of Sales for Stop & Shop’s NY Metro Division. "While all store aisles will be updated with new signage, we will be bringing a greater assortment of products and savings to customers throughout the store.”

"Many current Norkus Foodtown associates have been offered positions at the new Stop & Shop stores or at other stores within the Stop & Shop chain" the statement says.

An employee outside the store on Sunday said nearly all Foodtown employees had accepted comparable job offers from Stop & Shop.

Gerry Norkus, of Norkus Enterprises Inc., said in the statement, “For 76 years and three generations, it's been our honor and pleasure to serve the local communities. We wish Stop & Shop continued success as our family pursues other opportunities."

"In recognition of the store openings, Stop & Shop will make a $10,000 donation to the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties to fight hunger in the community," the statement says.

“The fight against hunger is a cause in which we can and must make a difference and we look forward to continuing a strong relationship with the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties,” said Arlene Putterman, Stop & Shop Manager of Public and Community Relations.

Stop & Shop currently operates 10 stores in Monmouth and Ocean counties.
