Barnegat Bay Blitz in Point Boro on Friday

Point Borough Blitz Clean Up - Volunteers and Refreshments Needed

The Barnegat Bay Blitz is a partnership event spearheaded by the NJDEP and the NJ Clean Communities Council in an effort to bring together citizens, students, businesses and local governments to help clean up and foster a greater appreciation for the Barnegat Bay and its 660 square mile watershed.

Point Pleasant Borough is one of the communities in the watershed and will once again be hosting a group of volunteers and DEP employees to go out and be good stewards to the environment by partaking in this clean-up event.

As always, volunteer participation and anyone wishing to donate refreshments is immensely appreciated.

The plan is to meet at the Community Park across from Borough Hall on Friday morning.  Please arrive between 9:00 and 9:30 for the sign in, send-off and additional instructions that may be needed.

Tips for Participating in a Local Blitz Clean-up include:

• Wear gloves when picking up litter - bring work gloves or obtain gloves from coordinator.
• Wear closed-toe, flat-heeled shoes or boots - not sandals, flip-flops or clogs.
• Dress appropriately and be prepared for the weather.
• Long-sleeved shirts and pants are preferred, to prevent scratches, insect bites, etc.
• Bring water and food if you plan to be outdoors for awhile.
• Bring a digital camera to help document the cleanup (what is collected, people in action, etc.)
• Bring appropriate medicine if you are allergic to bee stings, spider bites, etc.
• Do not risk injury - avoid slippery, unstable, rocky and steep areas.
• Be alert for poison ivy, brambles, snakes, spiders and insects.
• Back away from animals, hives and holes and avoid poking or aggravating them.
• Avoid picking up large, bulky or heavy items, such as tires, appliances or furniture.
• Avoid stepping on or picking up nails or broken glass.
• Avoid picking up hazardous materials, such as syringes and unmarked containers. Contact a coordinator if these items are encountered.
• Separate recyclable items from trash by carrying at least two trash bags with you.
• Avoid wearing headsets, work in pairs or groups, and look up often to see where others are.
• Tell the cleanup coordinator if heavy items or potentially hazardous materials are found.
• Tie filled trash bags securely and do not overfillll them, to avoid rips.
• Park your vehicle off-road and at least 6 feet from traffic areas.
• Use crosswalks and traffic signals where available.
• Face oncoming traffic and clean one side of a road at a time.
• Respect private property - do not go onto property that is marked, fenced in or gated.

Your interest in participating in Point Pleasant's Barnegat Bay Blitz cleanup is greatly appreciated!
