Detour Around Part of Broadway in Point Beach to be Lifted Tonight

Ocean County laid new pipe, will finish with paving

A traffic detour around a short stretch of Broadway in Point Beach will be removed tonight, as an Ocean County pipe replacement project moves into its final phase.

Traffic is being detoured around a small stretch of Broadway in Point Beach while the county finishes a pipe replacement job, but the work may be done by Thursday, officials said.

The county project at the corner of St. Louis Avenue has temporarily closed one block of Broadway, with traffic being detoured to Channel Drive, Point Beach Police Detective Patrick Petruzziello said.

Eastbound traffic has been redirected down Chicago Avenue to Channel Drive, while westbound traffic is shifted to Channel Drive and down Chicago Avenue, Petruzziello said.

Thomas Curcio, county road supervisor, said he expects the detour to be removed tonight.

He said the work was needed because an underground, storm drain pipe collapsed last weekend at the southeast corner of Broadway and St. Louis.

A sink hole gave way on top of the collapsed pipe, requiring the county to take the catch basin apart, Curcio said.

The county replaced the faulty, old, steel pipe with ductile iron pipe, which is a lot sturdier and long lasting, he said.

The pipe replacement was finished Tuesday, with paving, the final phase of the work, planned possibly for Thursday, weather permitting, Curcio said.
