UPDATE: GOP Responds to Point Beach Democrats Outrage Over Flyer

A Facebook post noted that Republicans Tom Vogel and Tom Toohey were "called out on it" at candidates night held on Wednesday.

Several Point Pleasant Beach Council candidates have accused Republicans of distributing a "blatantly false flyer" about the Democrats, but a local Republican has responded that the flyer simply asked a question that needed to be aseked.

"Until now it's been a fairly quiet and civil campaign," the Democrats wrote in the Facebook post. "We would have liked to respond, but we can't guarantee that we could get something mailed that fast so we will put the word out everywhere we can."

The Facebook post noted that Republicans Tom Vogel and Tom Toohey were "called out on it" at candidates night held on Wednesday.

Reached this morning, Stephen Reid told Patch that the issue arose over a question in a flyer that asked how Tom Davis recieved a reduction in his taxes.

"This evening. When asked where they got their info, Vogel said they 'just heard it' and admitted it wasn't verified,"the post said. "When Tom Davis quoted a letter from our former tax assessor and proved their accusations a complete lie, and Dave Cavagnaro read the whole context of what he said that they had taken out of context, Vogel's response was "my bad." UNBELIEVABLE!! Integrity matters, even in politics!"

Reid said that Davis recieved a tax reduction because his property had been contaminated and was entitled to a reduction.

(Howard Carpenter, in a letter he wrote to Davis while he was Point Beach Tax Assessor, addresses the issue. See attachment.)

When Vogel said "my bad," Reid said, it was a way of saying "can we just move on." He said that the Republicans felt justified in askign the question, because "when you look at the surface of [the tax reduction,] it didn't look good."

The election is Nov. 5.
