Is Your Company's Website a Benefit or Liability?

Websites. They're the first impression of your company that potential customers will see. They are your chance to make your case and showcase your portfolio to your clients and provide a wealth of information. They are a great tool to communicate your message, products and testimonials and can boost sales for you business with strategies such as search engine optimization (SEO) that boost your website's rankings in the major search engines. 

While all these aspects of a website are all well-and-good, having a "good enough" website that looks like it's as old as that ancient computer you're using can turn people off. You know what I'm talking about, those dreadful websites that look like they were made in Microsoft Frontpage, the (now discontinued) amateur web design tool that was once part of the popular Office suite, that caused serious compatibility issues.

Or what if that website is displaying "Plugin not found errors" when Mac-using customers try to play that Windows media file embedded in it? Doesn't look so good for your company's image, now does it? Or what if John or Jane Doe wants to access your website from their fancy new iPhone or 'Droid and they can't get a mobile formatted version, and instead go to a competitor with a nicer website?

Websites, like all technology, eventually get outdated. This is extremely evident from online companies such as Google and Apple. Take a look at their websites and see for yourself, the layouts are constantly evolving, sometimes to the chagrin of their userbases. This is needed, in order to stay relevant, and usable to your clients.

You also should be using a content management system (CMS) such as WordPress or Joomla in order to provide rich, extensible experiences and powerful backend analytics and administrations.

So take a look at your website, and ask yourself: "Is this helping me drive sales, or is this holding me back?" 

Without a doubt, 1990s website tech simply will not cut it in 2012, and if you haven't realized it yet, your competitors already have.
