Quiet Hurricane Season for Point Beach, Boro Ends Saturday

The official 2013 hurricane season will end Nov. 30 with Point Boro and Beach dodging the worst

The official hurricane season ends on Saturday (Nov. 30), and the Jersey Shore and Point Beach and Boro will remain largely unaffected by any 2013 storm.

The news is welcome after Hurricane Sandy caused record flooding and billions of dollars of damage to New Jersey and New York in October 2012.

The National Hurricane Center this week reported no signs of tropical development that would affect any land mass. Cold air and ocean temperatures would prevent a tropical system retaining its strength on a journey north toward New Jersey at this time of year.

The midpoint of the six-month hurricane season passed on Sept. 1 before the Atlantic Ocean saw its first named hurricane (for only the sixth time since 1950). The season's only two hurricanes (Humberto and Ingrid) came in September, and neiither affected the U.S.

Aside from the heavy rain dumped by the remnants of tropical storms Andrea (early June) and Karen (early October), Galloway Township has not seen rain, wind or flooding from any of the 13 named tropical storms in 2013.
