Governor Ignores Climate Change in Sandy Rebuilding

Gov. Christie's rebuilding policies put families and property back in harm's way for the next storm.

This month at an event in Union Beach, Gov. Christie finally spoke out on climate change and rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy.  His response could not be more disappointing and misinformed.

He said he did not have time “to ponder the esoteric question of the cause of this storm.”  He made it clear climate change is not a priority saying, “Candidly, I don't have time to deal with it... It's not a main concern for me.”  He even went so far as to say, “You know what? If you asked of these people in Union Beach, I don't think they give a damn (about climate change)."

Hurricane Sandy was the ninth such devastating storm to hit the Garden State in the last three years and the fourth 100-year storm to hit New Jersey in the past two decades. We have had hurricanes, tornadoes, and Halloween snow storms. There have been too many coincidences. You cannot deny that climate disruption is a factor and it is impacting New Jersey.

Climate change will only make such storms worse. We need to protect our families here in New Jersey from the impacts of climate disruption and sea level rise. In New Jersey we deserve strong action by our leaders to help reduce the likelihood and severity of future disasters.

With all the people of New Jersey that have been devastated by the recent storms, for the Governor to try to ignore climate change is outrageous, dangerous, and puts people at risk.

By ignoring climate change, the Governor is showing he cares more about his national political profile and pleasing the Koch brothers than the people of New Jersey and protecting our coast. If we do not deal with climate change as we rebuild we will be wasting millions of dollars and putting people in harm’s way.

Instead the Governor is rolling back policies that reduce climate change pollution and promote clean energy alternatives. Gov. Christie is moving New Jersey in the wrong direction by pulling us out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) and cutting clean energy funding.

The Governor cut the DEP Office of Climate Change and has stopped progress under previous administrations to implement hazard planning to address sea level rise.

The Governor says he is too busy to think about climate change while making appearances on the Late Show and Morning Joe and doing reelection campaign fundraisers. He is trying to bury his head in the sand on climate change, but the storm surge just wiped away that sand.

The areas hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy are areas that were projected to be most vulnerable to climate change. A study by Rutgers University four years ago found that 9% of New Jersey’s land area could be under water as a result of climate change.

A recent study found that by 2050 the sea level at Sandy Hook could rise by 21 to 35 inches, meaning water could move up to three feet inland. The National Climate Assessment released in January found that the chances of 1-in-10 year coastal floods could triple by 2100.

But the Governor has no plans to move those families along our coast out of harm’s way through buyouts or hazard planning. In New York, Gov. Cuomo is implementing a program to encourage families in flood prone areas to take buyouts and relocate.  The $400 million program would offer the pre-storm value of the home along with additional incentives if people in the most vulnerable areas move or if an entire block moves.

In New Jersey, our program for purchasing flood prone properties, Blue Acres, is broke and the acquisitions have occurred in a dozen communities along the Passaic, Raritan, and Delaware Rivers. The program does not apply to coastal communities or the Bayshore area. Communities like Sayerville that want to be bought out are not included in the Blue Acres program. The Blue Acres program as is will not address the needs of Sandy relief. We need a broader, better funded program to move people out of harm’s way.

This year the Legislature released the last of the Blue Acres funding, leaving the program broke. No properties can be acquired until a stable funding source is established or a new bond act is passed. So far the Governor has not announced his plans on open space funding.

In over 20 years, Blue Acres has only bought out around 200 properties. The Blue Acres program has only spent in its history 10% of what Gov. Cuomo is proposing in New York.

Blue Acres purchases can take decades as some people choose to stay in the neighborhood. The program can take down a couple of houses but it is difficult to put together a package of neighboring homes which can then be transformed into a flood plain or flood storage area. Gov. Cuomo is working to prevent this by providing incentives for an entire block moving in the New York state program.

Climate disruption worsens extreme weather, threatening our families and communities. New Jersey is a coastal state and sees the most severe impacts of these storms. Instead of ignoring climate change, we need to reduce greenhouse gas pollution, protect low lying areas from flooding, and establish a stable funding source for the purchase of flood prone properties. The future of our state depends on it.

frankie you are still spouting your nonsense? damn you love to hear yourself type.

So each human is its own species you idiot? You are definitely a 609er. Do you pay someone to read the patch to you?

Hey Frack, you have proved yourself a real contribution to society. Why don't you get your own head out of the toilet before criticizing someone else about it...unless, of course, you enjoy it which is not that hard to believe
Tom February 15, 2013 at 09:16 pm
Frank, do you think that's the first time a storm like that has hit NJ (or what is now called NJ ?). These storms have happened in the past and will happen in the future.

Come on ladies and gentlemen, this reynolds character is the one and only Frank Rizzo toolsack. Nothing but BS and name calling left wing radical cracksniff.
frank reynolds February 16, 2013 at 01:29 am
that means so much from someone hiding behind a name like "fed up" . i think we need a translator in the room for fed up here because i think frank rizzo was a mayor of philly who died years ago.yeah left wing radical "stuff" . like no one can look up for themselves what the temps have been for the past 10 yrs or what the ocean temps have been tom. heres a "left wing fact" for all of you. if you heat the ocean you put a lot more energy into the atmosphere and these storms will increase in frequency and intensity. tom yes there have been storms before but do you ever remember people having to build their houses on stilts before or so many millions of people so badly affected? . the answer is no. this summer the water temp in seaside hts ran 10 degrees above normal. is that a part of the routine too? catching fish that are usually found in south american waters?no instead we,ll leave it to fed up here who in their paranonia think dead mayors are coming after them and the national weather service and its data going back to the 1800s is some sort of " lefty plot" . dont worry fed up you,ll figure it out someday LT Coldumbo.

Reading Frank Reynolds comments he seems to have a good understanding of science and facts. Reading the comments from the anti science crowd living in denial opposing him is akin to watching the professor on Gilligan's island trying to explain how electricity works to Gilligan.
Project Bluebeam February 18, 2013 at 12:02 pm
A. Not falling for AGW Carbom-credit Ponzi schemes does not make one "anti-science"
B. Why does the self-proclaimed "pro-science" crowd ignore space weather and physics? C. You used Gilligan's Island as a metaphor and expect to be taken seriously?
Duffer February 18, 2013 at 12:22 pm
Why does the supposed, smarter than anyone, Pro-Science crowd ignore or get down right nasty when I bring up the things most college freshmen learn in their first Statistics class. It is a simple fact that the theory of climate change does not stand up to the basic mathematical rules found in any Statistics 101 text book.
Tom February 18, 2013 at 12:55 pm
So, Frank, you're going to base climate change on 10 years of data? You're going to base the water temp. off of sea side as a predictor of climate change? As for the people being affected, no it hasn't been so bad in the past, but we didn't have all the people living on the shore as we do now, we didn't have houses where marshes once stood and helped to alleviate flooding, we didn't have storm sewer systems that allowed water from the ocean and bays travel fast and far inland with an epic storm surge.
As for south american fish, name one. We've always had warm water fish off of NY/NJ from august through october (wahoo, amberjack, cobia, to name a few). We often have eddy's that break off of the gulf stream and move closer to shore bringing warm water fish with them (of more tropical origin). Your argument is silly.

I guess you missed the storms are coming more frequent and more violent? drought in the mid west? tornados in the winter down south? oceans temps rising? There are many reasons for this but the fact is it is happening
Tom February 18, 2013 at 02:19 pm
Forked; I don't argue with the fact that we've seen water temps rise, and land temps rise here and there. However, what the media doesn't report is that the trend has been downward GLOBALLY over the past 7 years or so. My argument is that weather and climate are cyclical, and what we're experiencing now is not out of the ordinary.
As for the storms being "more violent", tell me exactly how you have proof of that. Is it simply because that's what is sensationalized in the media and the weather channel? Tornado's in the south in winter; do you think that is anomaly? Tornados have occurred in winter in the south since Man has been in North America, there are periods when there are more, and periods when there are less. The whole notion of global warming is a political movement, nothing more, nothing less. Once data started to show that some places are cooling (such as europe, and now that parts of the antarctic are back in a cooling period) the mantra was changed to "climate change". Once climate scientists (those who are ethical) get a real understanding of how particular climate patterns, such as ENSO, and the North Atlantic Oscillation, drive yearly weather events, we'll have a better understanding of WHY we experience changes in climate, and HOW/WHY the Earth has experienced these cycles in the past, present and future.

Since it's an unprovable theory let's just sit on our hands and wait for the next Super storm. Yes, that makes sense. Let's build everything to the same level but don't expect the government to bail you out if the next super storm comes less than 100 years from October 30, 2012.
I took statistics, Duff, the only thing statistics is good for is to prove whatever theory you want to prove. You start with your theory then ask the questions that will prove your theory.

There is an interesting article on the Earth's temperature changes available here. http://www.ncpa.org/pub/st279
Publius February 18, 2013 at 04:15 pm
Thanks, life time resident! The first to add real substance to this "debate." "The Earth currently is experiencing a warming trend, but there is scientific evidence that human activities have little to do with it. Instead, the warming seems to be part of a 1,500-year cycle (plus or minus 500 years) of moderate temperature swings." Read the NCPA report referenced above for some intelligent analysis and fact based conclusions.
Duffer February 18, 2013 at 09:17 pm
There were once glaciers as close as Bucks County PA. There were also once trees and grasslands in places we now consider actic. All this before industrialized society existed. Do you think the glowing orb in the sky might have had something to do with those temperature swings? Now we are supposed to believe that temperature changes measured in fractions of a single degree based on barely 100 years worth of questionable data indicate the end of the world and that shazamm shazamm shazamm....its all man's fault. The solution they say is more and bigger government and give up some of that freedom and money you folks have been enjoying. How dare you have a 100 watt light bulb!!!!! How dare you!!!! How dare you be so wasteful and drive an SUV to take your kids to school!!!! How dare you!!!!Its your fault American middle class that the world is warming by 1/10th of a degree. You should be ashamed!!!!! Now give us your money, the keys to that SUV and those evil light bulbs. How dare you!!!!! Trust big government and particularly leftists. They will fix everything at your expense. Just give them your money and your freedom. Don't dare question them either or challenge their logic or science....they are smarter than anyone else....just ask them and they will be sure to let you know how much smarter than you they think they are.
life time resident February 18, 2013 at 09:34 pm
I don’t think can be any real doubt that the Earth’s climate is cyclical. On the other hand I don’t think that there can be any real doubt that humans are causing some damage to the planet and its atmosphere. That being said, on the grand scale of things, human impact on atmospheric support systems has little to do with rebuilding the NJ shore after a hurricane. Statements like “A recent study found that by 2050 the sea level at Sandy Hook could rise by 21 to 35 inches, meaning water could move up to three feet inland” are just plain alarmist, but I guess they get the author paid. According to NOAA “Estimates for the 20th century show that global average sea level rose at a rate of about 1.7 mm yr.” http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/pd/climate/factsheets/issea.pdf NOAA’s estimates are more along the lines of 7 inches in rise by 2050 but they are quick to point out that any future predictions are just that, conjecture.

This "climate change" nonsense is the ultimate power grab on the part of totalitarians. When the government is able to control your daily activity on the premise that it effects the weather, you are totally screwed.
The impact of human activity is overrated.

Where does this idiot get his info. Ninth devastating storm in the last 3 years. Fourth 100 year storm int the last 2 decades. Where the hell have I been that I Missed all this . Come on patch how could let someone this ignorant write and article

That article is produced by a right wing (un)think tank controlled by the oil industry, and its "authors" are singularly unqualified to opine on the subject. Next time, do your homework before you link to such bat-excrement crazy nonsense.

proud when are you beginning your "stop the red cross" and "stop the salvation army " campaigns?.
iknow February 21, 2013 at 02:01 am
All of you are idiots. Climate change or not, there is a reason that every other continent on earth has "ruins". Here in America we spend trillions of dollars rebuilding areas that are prone to devastation. I donate to the American Red Cross and most recently Restore The Shore, but only because I feel bad for my fellow humans who are too stupid to move inland.
