Point Boro Rotary Melanoma Awareness 5K

Point Boro Rotary Sponsors the Kevin A. Brue Melanoma Awareness 5K and One-mile Fun Run on June 15

On June 15, the Point Pleasant Boro Rotary Club is sponsoring its Kevin A. Brue Melanoma Awareness Father's Day 5K and One-mile Fun Run.

The sixth annual run will start and finish at the Community Park on Bridge Avenue. The fun run starts at 8:00 a.m. The featured 5K will go off at 8:30 a.m. on a flat and fast course through the Bay Head Shores community that saw some of the heavy impact from Hurricane Sandy.

Proceeds from the event will go towards the club's efforts to help melanoma research and to aid various charities and community-based organizations and groups.

The 5K is named for Kevin A. Brue who lost a courageous battle with melanoma several years ago. His father, John Brue Sr., is an active Point Boro Rotarian and chairperson of the race committee.

Kevin’s brother is John Brue Jr., Point Borough resident and lead singer of the Brue Crew band, which will perform live from 8 to 11 a.m. on the day of the race.

Melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer and it takes a life every hour of every day. Early detection is critical in heading off the ravages of melanoma.

In addition to making substantial donations to the Melanoma Research Foundation, the club helps efforts such as: the Point Borough Police Department's DARE program; provides scholarships to local high school seniors; sponsors a water safety program for young children; distributes dictionaries to each Boro third grader to foster literacy; assists St. Gregory's Pantry; participates in helping to fund Wreaths Across America and Face of America that honors our veterans. Money also goes to Rotary International's effort to eradicate polio and establish clean water projects.

OceanFirst Bank, with branches in Point Pleasant and Point Pleasant Beach, is the prime sponsor for the sixth year.

This year's 5K will feature electronic timing to expedite same day finish information. T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 400 registered runners. Trophies will be awarded to the top three overall male and female finishers.

Age group trophies will also be presented to leading runners. There is also a trophy for the first father crossing the finish line. Music will be provided by the Brue Crew Band and refreshments will be available before and after the race for the runners.

As in past years, this event is looking forward to the help offered by the Borough administration, school system, the Police, Public Works and Recreation departments and our First Aid squad.

Early registration, if completed by June 10, is $25 for the 5K and $10 for the Fun Run. After June 10th, fees are $30 and $15 respectively.

On June 14, runners registered by June 10th can pick up race packets and enjoy some complimentary refreshments at the Forte Restaurant, Bridge Avenue from 6 to 9 p.m.

The 5K and Fun Run attracts numerous sponsors and this year that group, so far, includes: Investors Bank; Century Carpet; Manasquan Savings Bank; Dr. Patricia McCormack; Provident Bank; Blazak Manufacturing; Kuflik Dermatology; National Data Mart; the Brue Family; the Fall Family; M.
