The Mere Mention of Head Lice...Are You Itchy Yet!!!

Well, it’s that time of year again; back to school = head lice season.  The best thing you can do for your family is to be prepared. Perform weekly head checks on your children weekly with a good metal comb.

The facts of head lice:

·         Head lice actually prefer clean heads.  Although, they’ll take anything they can get, in a pinch.

  • Kids are happy to see each other and show that in various ways like hugging (I know, weird) which suits the lice just fine since they crawl quickly. Flying and jumping aren’t their strong suits.
  • A mature fertilized louse (10 days old) can lay up 3-5 eggs a day twice daily, which will hatch in a week.  Times that by 20+ kids and dozens of hugs and hat mix ups and well, let’s just say the lice are having a party.
  • The same mysterious diagnosis that takes place when you read about a rare disease and suddenly think you have it, also takes place when someone just mentions the word lice.  Suddenly your head will start itching and you’ll be sure you have them.  Your head is itching now, isn’t it?

·         No one can really pinpoint when and where a lice problem starts, the “Blame Game” is never fun and can cause hurt feelings.

·         People with color treated hair can still get head lice, grey, brunet, blonde or carrot-tops, are all equal targets.

·         Nits(lice eggs) are harmless once removed from the head (they cannot hatch).

·         Once removed from the head, live Lice (bugs)die within 48 hours.

·         Lice have become resistant to the Over-The-Counter pesticide treatments.
