2012 Point Pleasant Borough Health Fair

Point Pleasant Borough Health Fair a Success

On April 23 the doors of Point Pleasant Borough Police Department/Borough Hall stood open to welcome a steady stream of visitors to the Point Pleasant Borough Health Fair.

The Point Pleasant Borough Community Watch and Meridian Health Systems hosted the event.

The Community Watch organization is comprised of the police chief, law enforcement officers, a council member, and community representatives all working together to create crime prevention programs and public safety education.

Meridian Health Systems is a leading non-profit health care organization in New Jersey which consists of multiple hospitals specializing in many areas of healthcare.

At the door to the Health Fair, Point Pleasant Borough High School National Honor Society volunteers handed visitors information packets.

Just inside the entrance, Daiana Rios of Meridian Health Systems greeted newcomers with a smile, instructions for screenings and a free canvas bag, compliments of Meridian.

“Meridian Health Systems provides free health screenings throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties,” Rios explained. “And we do it to build awareness of our health system, as well as to build a connection with the community.”

Displays which contained brochures about health-related issues, as well as future events sponsored by Meridian, ringed the courtroom.

Health screening stations were set up in the rear of the room and were manned by the friendly and professional Meridian staff, who took blood pressure and pulse readings, asked lifestyle questions, and performed bone density, cholesterol, and blood sugar testing.

Many members of the Community Watch organization were also present at the Health Fair.

So where do health screenings fit into the Community Watch?

“The Community Watch program is all about safety,” said CJ Sabosik, Community Watch Resident Coordinator. "But it’s not just about police safety. It’s about fire safety, and health and wellness, which is all part of the town safety.”

Mary Jane Bavais, Community Watch Assistant Resident Coordinator, added “It’s good to have a healthy community, because a healthy community is a safer community.”

The Health Fair is a free public service and will be held annually.
