Summer Trash Pick Up
Dear Mayor and Council members,
I am writing to you today to ask you to reconsider your twice weekly summer trash pick up schedule. The weather is nice now. I like to run in the mornings, ride my bike to the park with my kids, and walk to get pizza or Italian ice with my family. I cannot do these activities without dodging garbage cans in the street every time I leave my house! Policy allows people to place their cans out up to 24 hours before trash is picked up. In my neighborhood, it is not picked up until 1 or 2 o'clock in the afternoon. This means, that for up to four days a week, I get to look at garbage cans up and down my street. Many people in town can't figure out when their pick up is, so add a day or two. I don't think seeing garbage cans lining every street in town does anything for the quality of life in Point Pleasant in the summer.
I am sure you have complaints from people who believe it is a "health hazard." I DO NOT agree. I have a family of five, and still put my trash out once a week in the summer. Pet waste and diaper solids can be flushed, most food scraps can be composted, and recycle recycle recycle!
I understand that the town pays an additional $40,000 for the extra pickup. I believe this money can be used for better purposes elsewhere in the town budget. Perhaps funding for a few signs or lines painted in the road for our "Complete Streets" program that was recently approved? Improving the quality of life for the residents of Point Pleasant is NOT done by lining the streets with garbage all summer.
