Abused Cocker Spaniel 'Sammy' Leaves Animal Hospital

Sammy will move to a foster home, hospital staff says

The cocker spaniel who authorities charge was brought to an animal shelter by his abuser was released from a Monmouth County animal hospital Monday.

"Sammy," estimated to be about 13 or 14 years old, was brought to the Monmouth County Animal Shelter by Keith Morgan, 56, of Brick, who told staff that he and his wife, Shauna Ewing Morgan, 43, found the dog in a garbage bag on the side of Belmar Boulevard in Wall.

But authorities later said an investigation showed the couple owned the dog, who was covered in feces and urine and encased in its own matted fur, unable to walk.

Less than a month later, Sammy walked out of the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital on his own, a social media post from the hospital said Monday.

"It is with happy tears that we saw Sammy leave the hospital today and head to his foster home," the post said. "Everyone at RBVH is forever thankful to his foster (and potential adopter) who has taken Sammy into a loving home with open arms."

Sammy will be living with other senior cocker spaniels "with a similar energy level," the post said. His health will continue to be monitored by hospital staff.

The Morgans, of Sawmill Road, have retained an attorney and are scheduled to appear in Brick Municipal Court May 14, court staff have said.

The animal hospital encouraged those inspired by Sammy's story to consider adopting a rescued pet.
