Brick Fire Victim Saved By Point Boro First Aid Squad Passes Away

An 81-year-old Brick woman who was hospitalized Sunday after a fire broke out at her home has died, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

Mary Irene Scarnechia of 276 Nasto Terrace, Building 21, died after succumbing to injuries possibly related to the fire.

Point Boro First Aid Squad members were dropping off a patient at the Ocean Medical Center emergency room in Brick Sunday when they detected smoke from the residence.

Thanks to their alertness, fire departments from Brick Township, Point Pleasant Boro and Point Pleasant Beach darted to the scene at 276 Nasto Terrace in Brick Township, rapidly made contact with one of the fire's victim and transported the person promptly to the hospital, according to emergency personnel.

The fire departments then fought the blaze for approximately three hours, according to Travis Popiel, captain of the Point Boro First Aid Squad.

Point Boro First Aid Squad had transported the victim prior to any fire personnel arriving on location.

"Noticing they did not see any emergency services, they continued towards the smoke shortly after finding the structure on fire and, in turn, rapidly administered care to the patient, along with Brick PD officers, on location," Popiel said.

Multiple EMS agencies from Brick, Lakewood, and Point Boro were also requested to respond to conduct rehabilitation efforts, as well as treat any injuries related to the fire.
