Brick Men Charged with Beating Point Boro Man

Tuesday robbery and assault occurred on Harding Drive in Brick

Brick Police detectives have arrested two township men in the robbery and assault of a Point Pleasant man at a Brick residence.

Police were called to the 100 block of Harding Drive at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday after a man had called and reported he was assaulted by two men in the garage of a home, which belongs to a relative, Capt. John Rein said.

When police arrived, the victim, 20-year-old Rick Hatch of Point Pleasant Borough, was found with several injuries to his head and face, Rein said.

The two men are alleged to have punched and kicked Hatch in the head until he was unconscious, then stole $60 from his pocket before fleeing in a vehicle, said Rein. When he regained consciousness, he went into the home and a relative called police.

Hatch, who was treated on scene by Brick Volunteer EMS before being brought to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, for the treatment of multiple lacerations and contusions as well as several facial fractures, was able to identify one of the suspects, Rein said.

The investigation that followed led to the arrest of two Brick men – William Chapman, 19, and Dale Kessler, 22, both of Sawmill Road – late Wednesday night.

Both were charged with one count each of robbery and aggravated assault. Ocean County Superior Court Judge Wendel E. Daniels set bail on both at $200,000.

Both were transported to the Ocean County Jail in lieu of bail.

Brick Police Detectives Erik Olsen and Thomas Cooney made the arrests, Rein said.

The investigation is ongoing, Rein said. Those with information are asked to call Olsen at 732-262-1120.

Put that $60 towards bail idiots.

It's unfortunate the victim was not armed...
jonnyyayas September 28, 2012 at 04:43 pm
Art, you are 100% right! People need to be able to defend themselves. A popular saying among cops is "When seconds count, we are minutes away". A weapon would have probably given him a good edge on these guys, and no one who matters cares what happens to criminals anyway!

Another reason Jersey residents should no longer tolerate the denial their constitutional right to carry a firearm usurped by the criminal state legislators that we now have in power . The best thing we can do is to vote out these criminals from power so we can remove this type of slime from our midsts. Once the people have the right to carry the crime rate will go down as it has gone down in every state that respects it's residents as people not as servents to an unjust system run by elected officials interested in their own well being and not the peoples.

Nj Ghost....I couldn't have said it better !

Its sad to say but if you want the right to defend yourself with a firearm you have to move out of NJ. I went to Florida took a class, and in 15 days after sending in my application, finger prints, and a check I got a license's to carry a gun in Florida and over 20 states, but not in NJ. To get a permit to just buy a gun here in NJ its over a 30 day wait. The system is broken here in NJ.

I do not believe that the 20 year victim or the 2 punks who beat him up would have been better off with a gun in this instance. I am sure there is a lot more to this story than what we are seeing.
Rick September 29, 2012 at 01:05 pm
Savages! Who raised this trash? Charge them with attempted murder and I can only hope that they get beaten up by gangs in prison.
Melvin Udall September 29, 2012 at 03:46 pm
Actually, the wait ing period to purchase a hand gun in NJ could be up to four months or more. It depends on the town you live in. The police chief in your town has the final word on whether you receive a purchase permit before you can buy a hand gun. NJ is notorious in America as having the strongest or strictest gun regulations in America Yet, the politicians will use "more gun control " ,to get elected. The public generally has no idea just how much control already exists.Ignorance truly is bliss!
The comment that the victim should not have had a gun in this situation pales when you consider these two punks could have beaten this guy enough to cause brain damage or death. If this victim had suffered that fate, and was your brother or father, would you still think he should not have been armed with a gun to protect himself?

Interesting facts. In thirty of more states in America such as Florida, where private citizens carrying a hand gun is permitted, the crime rate has dropped.
In NYC, where the carrying of a hand gun by citizens is strictly forbidden ffor many decades, crime rates are still the highest in the nation. When Obama gets another four years, he will appoint at least two new Supreme Court Justices during that four years. Stotomayor and Kagen , two ultra liberals already on the court, will surely get help to approve confiscation of all fire arms by private citizens. Don't think that can happen? It already has in other countries in countries that are part of western civilization.

All this talk about guns. If the victim had a gun, just maybe, they would've disarmed him and killed him rather then the injuries he has today. I'm not against guns, but most of you think that, that's always the answer. Just ask the father in Conn. that killed his 15 year old son by accident thinking he was a robber.
Alex Viecelli September 29, 2012 at 06:43 pm
I feel bad for that father. He took in that boy because he saw him coming to school dirty and hungry. The boy came from a broken home. The father had a choice to make. When someone comes at you dressed in black with a knife you have the two choices. Become a victim or shoot. There was also another crime in Conn not to long ago when a father was beaten nearly to death and his two young daughters along with the mothers were raped tied up and burned to death. A gun may of helped. If you own a gun Train with it. shoot it at least once a month. Police for the most don't prevent crime. They investigate it after the fact. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB6QpjHVmCY&playnext=1&list=PLA4E604655DA87C20&feature=results_main

Alex, you got it right!!! Rick, Anyone who owns any gun, especially a hand gun, needs to be proficient in the use of that weapon. There are training classes available and organized shooting ranges where a gun owner needs to participate.
I'm saying that Alex is correct. If that husband in Conn had the weapon and the training in it's use, those two dirt bags that raped and murdered his two daughters and wife would most likely be the ones who were dead. At least they would have had a chance. I'll take that! Not what happened in Conn. The kid who came out his father, who was armed and in the dark must have been unstable. To wear a mask and think it was funny or a prank to come at his father like he did, is a tragedy. However, the world is imperfect. I'll take my chances being prepared , and trained to protect myself and my family.

One last point. Many of us like myself received our traning in the military. Knowing how and when to use a weapon like a hand gun was sop. I'm pretty sure that those two dirts bags that raped and killed that woman and her two young daughters in Conn would not have needed a trail had it been my home.
Nj Ghost September 29, 2012 at 08:59 pm
Rick that is a logical thought however the two scumbags might not have even tried it knowing he was or could have been armed. You see rick they are cowards that's why they travel in packs.Put yourself in the kids position, would you rather be armed or not armed. As for me I would rather be armed. Punks like this go on to do it again and next time they will kill somewon. There just comes a time when you have to fight back no matter what.

Welcome home Melvin...I was stationed in Nha Trang 1966-1967.I missed the big party by several months took a hit in my right foot and neck went to phillipines for R&R..all is good.. great doctors and nurses.. I was with A co.in tent city . We were located between 5th Special Forces and a Chopper Unit I do not remember the name of. We lived in Tent City in Camp McDermott for awhile then we moved to the Pie Slice in the Summer of 67. IFFV ARTY was newly activated in country so we spent a lot of time constructing stuff in our compound along perimeter road. I ended up back at Ft Gordon Ga as an instructor. I was there (Nam) when the Shell Tanker was sunk and the choppers beside us were all blown up with satchel charges. Spent a lot of time going to and from the Grand Hotel as a courier. Still remember the Christmas lights hanging in all the beach bars year round. Glad your Ok, as the man said" They were the best of times, they were the worse of times" God were we young!

all you guys are talking like you really know whats going on i hapen to have went to high school both in brick and in point boro ,so I know pesonally know both parties and the truth behind this story ,
now what you guys dont know is that both parties are hooked on drugs and they both had planned to rob eachother , so the kid that "should have been armed" was just as wrong as the other people .....

That kid in Connecticut got what he deserved. He was no good and that's why that gentleman took him in to begin with. It's only a shame this poor guy has to live with the heartache he now faces every time he wakes up!
