Guide Dog Leads Brick Resident From Fire

No injuries in kitchen fire at apartment complex

A Brick woman's guide dog led her out of what could have been a very dangerous situation on Friday.

Authorities say a visually-impaired woman, Dana Vass, was led out of her residence at the Waterside Gardens apartment complex by her guide dog after a fire broke out in her apartment.

At about 2 p.m. Friday afternoon, the Breton Woods and Pioneer Hose fire companies responded to an apartment fire in Building 4 of the Waterside Gardens Apartment Complex on Schindler Drive, Fire Marshall Kevin Batzel said.

Vass, 42, was home by herself and cooking pizza in the oven when it accidentally caught fire, said Batzel.

"She was notified by the smoke alarm which activated in the residence, and her guide dog Boomer started barking," he said.

Boomer, a 2 year-old Beagle and Labrador mix, led Vass out the front door of the apartment to safety. Vass and the responding fire authorities credited both Boomer for his specialized training in the situation, as well as Vass' having a properly-working smoke detector in the apartment for the happy ending.

“The damage was contained to the oven and there was a smoke condition in the apartment, but the occupant was allowed to return after the residence had been properly ventilated by the fire department,” Batzel said.

Batzel said having working smoke detectors in one's home year-round is of key importance and a potentially life-saving safety measure.

No problem Sal. Also, Art, regarding "get a microwave" comment". I'm hoping they meant to get a microwave so as not to use the oven next time. But, you never know with some people, right?

To Art: I meant no offense when I said earlier that your religious beliefs didn't belong here - I simply meant that religious (along with political view points) should generally not be expressed in a public forum because there will always be some moron that can't help but insult a person's beliefs and faith. I AM a God fearing man - As far as "militant" goes perhaps his prayers weren't answered when he asked God for a new tricycle or doll to play with (perhaps as recently as last week). His comments are pretty much representative of what is wrong with society. Nothing to believe in = no concept of all of the good that occurs in this world ..... Sad, but I'll bet he is devoted to the very pieces of cotton fiber that state: IN GOD WE TRUST

Hey Chu, so an atheist is a bad person? Just keep in mind that 99.9% of the prison population AREN'T atheist. You will also have the company of pedophiles that gave their soul to Christ when you get to the imaginary gates..... I thank god for making me an ATHEIST.....

Chu, you were on the right path to say that religious & political views shouldnt take place in topics like this. Family & friends do not even speak of these topics as it complicates things. Everyone is entitled to believe what they want for whatever the reason maybe. Bottom line is there is always some controversy one way or the other. Don't judge as you don't want to be judged. ART to say someone is wicked b/c they don't believe in a god is so wrong it's disgusting. What I believe is wrong with the world today is way too much to write but it has nothing to do with believing or not believing. Also, for those who think because you may not believe in god doesn't mean that you don't believe in something. Also, Chu, I'm sure you were asking Santa for that doll or truck not praying to god for it. I do have a question, since we tend to thank god for all the good he has done for us. Who to we "thank" /blame for all the terrible things in the world such as hunger, shelter, disease 911, etc?
