County and local investigators have determined that improperly discarded smoking materials caused the fire that killed an 81-year-old Brick woman.

Mary Irene Scarnechia of 276 Nasto Terrace, Building 21, died of smoke inhalation and thermal burns in the structure fire on Sunday, according to an autopsy performed earlier this week, said Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

A scene examination was conducted and the area of origin was determined to be in the northeast corner of the unit's living room, Della Fave said.

Emergency crews were quick to the scene and attempted to save Scarnechia, they said.

Point Boro First Aid Squad members were dropping off a patient at the Ocean Medical Center emergency room in Brick when they detected smoke from the residence.

Thanks to their alertness, fire departments from Brick Township, Point Pleasant Boro and Point Pleasant Beach darted to the scene, rapidly made contact with the victim and transported her to the hospital, according to emergency personnel.

The investigation was conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Arson Investigation Task Force, which includes the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CIU and the Brick Township Bureau of Fire Safety.
