Man Charged with Robbery at Foodtown in Point Pleasant Beach

Police say shoplifting 'fairly common' at the grocery store on Route 35

A Point Pleasant Beach man was still being held in Ocean County jail on Thursday after being arrested on robbery, drug possession and other charges after allegedly trying to shoplift from Foodtown, police said.

Sean Papstein, 18, allegedly shoplifted about $15 worth of items from Foodtown and "became combative" with store security personnel, said Detective Patrick Petruzziello.

When police were called to the scene at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, Papstein allegedly gave police identification that was not actually his, Petruzziello said. Because of that, police also charged him with "falsely incriminating another."

Papstein was also charged with possession of controlled dangerous substances in connection with allegedly having less than 50 grams of marijuana and less than half an ounce of cocaine, Petruzziello said.

Papstein was charged with robbery because he "used force" while allegedly shoplifting, Petruzziello said.

"Shoplifting at Foodtown is a continual problem, so they have their own security personnel," Petruzziello noted.

Officer Derek O'Neill, who responded to the scene, also discovered that Papstein is wanted on an outstanding second-degree warrant for burglary and theft in South Carolina.

Papstein was lodged in Ocean County jail on $50,000 bail, no 10 percent option. It's expected he will face charges in Point Pleasant Beach and then be extradited to South Carolina, Petruzziello said.
