The event features a 6 p.m. greeting from Community Watch, followed by demonstrations and activities sponsored by Community Watch and the borough fire department, first aid squad and police department.

There will be free popcorn, cotton candy, and drinks provided by donations. The police Dare car, as well as an ambulance and fire truck, will be there.

Following National Night Out, the borough will participate in Light It Up at 7:30 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to sit on their front porch and leave outside lights on until dawn.

"Families are encouraged to sit with their friends and neighbors on their front porch to share ice cream, dessert or wine and cheese to have some bonding time with neighbors," said C.J. Sabosik, one of the founding members of the newly-revitalized Community Watch.

"All residents are asked to leave their porch lights on all night" to show neighborhood and town unity and a stand against crime, she said.

The idea is that neighbors get to know each other better, talk about looking out for each other as a means of helping to prevent crime, as well as reporting crime in a more timely, informative manner to police.

The police department has stressed repeatedly that a lot of crimes can be prevented, thwarted or resolved more quickly and effectively if neighbors look out for each other and report suspicious activity immediately.

Police are also urging all borough residents to lock car doors, as well as house doors and windows, to help prevent crime.
