The event, run by the Borough Community Watch volunteers, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. The evening will include information about the police department, the local Community Watch efforts, how to help prevent drug abuse and other various aspects of public safety and information about other local organizations.

This will be one of many such National Night Out events around the country designed to foster better communication between police and residents and between residents themselves, with the hope that neighbors will look out for each other, report suspicious activity and give police valuable tips in their investigations.

Last year's event at Riverfront Park also featured police officers educating families about the importance of wearing bicycle helmets and the Borough's volunteer fire department letting kids sit atop a rig.

All residents are encouraged to attend and bring a picnic supper. Volunteers will distribute free water, cotton candy, watermelon, pretzels and give-a-ways.

Borough Community Watch is asking residents to keep their porch lights on as a show of solidarity with the mission of National Night Out.
