Police are still searching for a man who pulled a gun on a maintenance man at the Comfort Inn on Route 30 earlier today, Absecon Police Chief David Riskey said.
The alleged gunman is described as a white male between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and blackpants. He allegedly pointed a gun, described as a black revolver, at the maintenance man in an eighth-floor boiler room before fleeing.
Police conducted an initial search and no one was found. A second search has been completed with the same result. Risley estimates there were 20 occupied rooms and 50 guests. They were taken to a conference room. No one was injured.
It is not believed the gunman is a patron at the hotel, Risley said.
"Somehow, he got into the building," Risley said, adding that the maintenance man initially believed he was a private contractor. " ... Some words were exchanged."
Risley didn't go into detail as to what the exchange entailed.
A portion of the White Horse Pike in Absecon was closed for three hours while multiple police agencies, including those from the state, Atlantic County Sheriff Frank X. Balles' office, K-9 units, the SWAT team, Galloway, Absecon, Atlantic City, Brigantine, Egg Harbor Township and Pleasantville conducted the search.
In total, there were about 100 police officers on the scene, Risley said. They began their search and made their way down, floor-by-floor, checking each room. Absecon EMS was also on the scene.
"The incident occurred on the eighth floor," Risley said. "We were afraid of the possibility of him going up on the roof and start shooting at cars driving by."
The incident is still under investigation by Detectives Leigh Gadd and Mitch Levin. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Absecon Police at 609-641-0667.
