Route 34 Shut For Hours After Accident

State highway at Paynter's Road closed for more than 2 hours following 6:40 p.m. accident

A downed utility pole shut Route 34 for hours following a single-car collision early evening Wednesday, Wall police said.

The right lane of the southbound state highway will remain closed through the night and into Thursday while repairs are being made, according to Wall Sgt. Chad Clark.

A 26-year-old Point Pleasant woman was traveling south on Route 34 around 6:40 p.m. when she lost control of her car and struck a utility pole near Paynter's Road. The pole fell on her car and pinned the woman, whom police did not identify, in the car.

Emergency crews could not remove her from the car because of the live electrical wires. Jersey Central Power & Light crews cut power to the lines and emergency personnel from South Wall Fire Rescue extricated the woman from the car, Clark said.

She was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune Township, by Wall Community First Aid and MONOC parmedics, Clark said.
