Route 35 Construction to Create Alternate Traffic Through Jan. 2

Traffic pattern changes in Bay Head and Mantoloking

Major roadwork is expected to continue along the northernmost portions of the barrier island's Route 35 corridor, Bay Head and Mantoloking, with alternating traffic through Jan. 2

Temporary traffic lights have been placed on Route 35 to help alternate north- and southbound travel, as the state road shrinks down to one open lane during construction.
Flag crews are helping direct traffic as the project continues along miles 8 through 12.5 on Route 35, which spans from the northern section of Brick on the barrier island to the southern portion of Point Pleasant Beach.

Traffic in Bay Head and Mantoloking south bound will also be detoured down side roads, putting southbound traffic to the east of northbound traffic in some portions of the island.

The complete reconstruction of Route 35 on the barrier island, from Bay Head to Island Beach State Park, began earlier this year. The island is divided into three portions, or contracts, to separate the project, and state DOT officials announced previously the major intrusive work to the northernmost portion will continue over the winter.

The alternate traffic pattern is currently scheduled through Jan. 2, but the construction schedule has plans for the entire northern section's reconstruction to be completed by summer 2014 on the 3.5-mile stretch.

The project includes overhauled drainage systems, new water pipes and updated sewer systems, in addition to newly paved roads.
